With the upcoming Venus Transit of the Sun next Tuesday June 5 @ 3:09 PM Pacific Daylight Time, (22:09 UTC/GMT) for us in California, I'm wondering if this is something I can safely photograph this with a Lee Big Stopper. Or do I need a darker, or lighter, ND filter?

There is another thread concerning this, the problem is a ND filter does not deal with the IR, which if you're using a telephoto lens or telescope, this could damage optics or worse your eye.

I thought I had read something along those lines before, but I guess I didn't search well enough. Thanks!

This is one of the threads:
https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1180929

You need the likes of ND 5, that's Neutral Density Index 5 or 10^5 or 100,000X density filter for safe Optical and Photographic use.

Thanks for the link. Funny, I used "Venus Transit" in my search and that link didn't show.

I'm now getting to the stage where I'm almost hoping for a dreadful weather forecast the night before. Because I know that, if there's just a slight chance of a break in the clouds, I'll be getting up at 04:00 to drive to my planned viewpoint in time to get setup for sunrise at 04:50.

At least if they predict cloud, rain, the end of the world, etc. I'll be able to stay in bed.

Make sure it's #14. Make sure there's no possible way it can accidentally be removed from the front of your lens.

I've put my leave request in at work, gotta use unpaid leave as I've just used up all my leave on a recent trip. Think my boss thinks I'm into astrology though ... didn't want to argue cause think a day photographing the sun might sound crazy, hahaha.Rain, hail or end of the world, I'm going to be sitting by my gear all day!

Good luck all! Can't wait to see all the pics!

To all who wish to observe:

Apart from all the safety and other photographic issues, DON"T forget to make your pics count as proper observations by setting the right (even local will do) time in your camera. I have found this site below useful to synchronise with GMT:
