Shot the First Communion at our church couple of weeks ago. I was asked by the priest to shoot it (Pro Bono) so to avoid the crowds at the altar (or not have any pics from the ceremony at all). He is into photography so he allowed (suggested) flash use.
Here are some shots. All were shot in RAW with 5D2 and 70-200 2.8 M2 and I did some basic PP in LR3.
Please let me know what I could/should have done better.

Get rid of the vignette.

Probably better than most parents would get with their P&S or cellphone so in that sense a success.

I like them, I'd be happy if one of those were my kid. But:

Wb seems a bit off and warm

The last one doesn't work for me at all. The vignette is bad and the expression not the best

I agree with the last image. Her expression does not seem "pleasing"... Toss the Vignette... You also have an odd crap going.. Too Boxy, just my opinion.

Love how you put it. I guess the emphasis is on the word "probably". LOL

the purpose for the vignette and the "odd" crops was to get rid of busy backgrounds and surroundings. The pictures were supposed to be candid and they were for the most part but the kids kept getting cramped together for some strange reason and I tried to make them the focus of the shot.

As far as WB goes I tried to make sure the skin tones looked natural. My monitor is not calibrated but I thought it looked OK>

Thank you all for your input. I will work on better crops.

use the crop tool if your using photoshop... i pretty much crop 6x4 or 4x6 and resize accordingly..

I don't think these are unacceptable in anyway, but they would benefit a lot from an improved white balance. The last picture doesn't work. I'd like to see more shots like #2, although my guess is you have a bunch of those and posted a variety of images instead.

Thanks Brick.

I didn't want to post all of the same and wanted to show you the "variety".
I tried to get a tight headshot of every child while in the pew, moment when they received the sacrament and when they performed an assigned function during the mass (reading, etc.).

I would pretty much echo what everyone else has said. The white vignette is a no-no, but other than that, not too bad. As for the WB, the skin tones look ok, it's the background that looks warm. Using a flash, this can happen.

yes, the vignette is gonzo. :)

I am actually struggling with the WB between the skin tones and the rest. I guess I will try to get the skin to look most natural and not worry about the background.
It was incandescent lighting throughout and I gelled the flash with 1/4 CTO but I guess it didnt work as well as I thought it would.
