Just looking on sigma4less.com looking at the bigma and the 70-200 2.8 when I noticed their new lenses and this Sigma 170-500mm f/5-6.3 APO DG was listed. http://www.sigma4less.com …2B%3D28SG170500F5DCA%3D29 (external link) Anybody know anything about this lens. At $669.95 seems like a pretty good alternative to the bigma, just doesn't go as wide.

No. Check out their second-hand value.

The lens is the same as the old version, except for some coatings on theoptics to reduce internal lens flare.

Go Bigma or go home!

It's not anything like the Bigma, not a matter of it's just not as wide. Different quality of glass used in it, no HSM (fast focusing). I've not seen what the new DG version is able to do but I thought the original version to be a bit of a dog really. I guess it's ok for the money it costs but for not much more there is far better avail to you. Not a great contrast out of it from memory either.

Maybe someone else will say it's great, everythings subjective I guess and these are just my own opinions. What say you other folks ?

Cheers Wayne :D

I have the non-DG version for which I paid about US$400 a couple of years ago. Here's what I said about it on another forum.

I was happy with it at first, excited by the reach, but didn't get enough keepers at the long end. Finally I had a Great Egret come close enough, I was using a good tripod and had enough light. I used a cable release. Still it wasn't sharp enough. So I thought maybe it wasn't ALL me. I've since added the 70-200/4 and the 400/5.6 oh and a 20D :-) Guess what, I get a lot more keepers.

If Ebay was in English instead of Chinese here it would be long gone.
