Get a 50mm f/1.8 for $70
It's a must for that price.

at the widest focal length, it can go down to 3.5, and at the max zoom it will only go to 5.6. you just have to get used to it or get a new lens. Don't worry, use flash! ;)

i would also liek to suggest the book Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson. Excellent resource for beginners. (not that this place isn't)

When you see a lens that says something like

"f/3.5-5.6" for instance, it moves from the widest the lens can be with the biggest aperture at 3.5 and then once you reach its total zoomed in form, the biggest aperture is 5.6.

That' swhat you get with less expensive lens. To get a contstant big aperture, you need to spend a little.

Although that 50 1.8 is a steal for the wide aperture.

Skiip,

welcome to the forum :D

The reason for that is that aperture basically is defined as 'focal length of the lense divided by width of exit pupil' ... so if you increase one of the two (by zooming), the aperture also increases ... unless the manufacturer has built some additional (and expensive) feature into the lens so that the diameter of the exit pupil seems to change as well ... in constant aperture zoom lenses.

NB: Maybe some basic course (online/offline) in photography 101 or a good 'beginners book' might answer even more questions for you and give you other insights ...

Best regards,
Andy

50 mm f1.8 for $100 and a lot of more expensive lenses.
