Thanks Kevan, and congratulations to the other 2 winners. After Kevan comments on our photos, it will be quite a challenge to give my opinion on your posting this week.

Congratulations to MDJGD (really liked that shot) and runners up.

I agree with your comments on my totem, Kevan, as I wasn't happy with it myself and saw the same faults.

Like Maureen, I had trouble deciding exactly what to do for this challenge and had also gone out and taken the following photo of this building that first came to mind when thinking of perspective distortion:

I can't waiting for that time when I know what I am doing, then judging images will be so much easier. I keep second guessing myself, hem and haw, and basically struggle all the way. I want to be always respectful to the image and teach myself, sharing my thoughts with you,as to what it is that makes for a really good photograph.

I guess from the responses here, there remains some confusion as to what PD is all about. I have two images here that I think offer answers to what a telephoto lens does in compressing space and what a wide angle does in distorting subject matter. Both approaches offer dramatic results, both are very much distorted. Many of you had this pegged.

Here's the telephoto effect, compressing the space between subjects so as to almost appear to be on one plane:

And here's my son's image, taken at Omaha Beach in Normandy which exaggerated the footing to the memorial there. Sorry, he gave me a downsized version (The kid apparently doesn't trust the old man...):

Hope I've helped.

I think it is the whole concept that has distorted my brain on this subject :):)

But yes, I have learned something even though I don't think I've learned how to apply it to my photography. Luckily I am sort of the dumb, happy-go-lucky type of photographer who is easily satisfied with only minimal effort :oops:

Life is hard...but I just take it one photograph at a time.

I think it's great that we are being challenged and learning from each other in these contests. Congratulations Jean-Guy.

Lol.I had a time wrapping my brain around it because I never think in those terms when photographing something. I totally understand it now, and will look out for times when I can jump outside the proverbial box.....I think thats what I was trying to do with mine, very unsuccessfully. The image was trying( lol) to be slight of eye, with the shadow looking like the background rock was pushing through...even explaining it makes me go weird..:p Again, I like it was so different!

Interesting. So based on what you said, I just now took the liberty of editing your image, closely cropping in and around the shadow you focused on. The results are kinda cool.

Thanks a bunch Kevan for the challenging challenge, and well done on the critiques as well. Thank you for the nod.
