Have a T3i and the kit lense for now. Not looking to spend a grand per lense at the moment but have put together a few lense choices that seem to be highly recommended. Will probably purchase over the course of the rest of the year, or when I can find a deal in the classifieds or elsewhere as funds allow.

Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM
Canon EF 50mm f1.4 USM
Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM

All three lenses are in the $375-$400 range right now. I plan to shoot a mix of people and natural objects. The 1.4 lense 50mm from what I have read stands out a bit more than the 1.8 50mm lense that runs $100, though for the price difference, I would think it should.

Can anyone make different recommendations or perhaps confirm the choices. All opinions welcome. Also, if I were to move to a different camera, such as a D60 or something higher end in the future, would these be good lenses to continue using? I don't want to buy something only to not really be able to do much with it in the future.

I'd recommend the 35f2 or the 50f1.4 first. I have the Canon 50f1.4, 35f2 and the 85f1.8. All are good lenses. It depends on what you want the lens to do for you. The 35f2 gives you the field of view of a normal lens on a crop (56mm). It is more generally useful. All these lenses are better at one particular thing. The 85 is great for sports or candids at street events. The 50 is a classic portrait view on a crop.
I use the 35f2 more than the others.
If you spend a lot of time at the zoo or photographing wildlife, the long zoom will be useful. I don't use my 70-210F4 much, but it is a great lens.

It really depends on what focal length you need the most. I didn't have much need for a 50mm prime on a crop body, but found the 28mm f/1.8 and 85mm f/1.8 lenses very useful. Others love 50mm on a crop.

I was never a fan of the 70-300mm IS lens. The copy I owned was soft at 300mm, and the auto focus hunted a lot in less than ideal light. You may want to look at the new Tamron 70-300 VC, or save a little more for the Canon 70-200mm f/4 L -- the non-IS version is $700 new, and can be found for under $600 used. Another low-cost option is the EFS 55-250mm, which is under $200.
