camera and lens selection

Through gifts and estate purchases, I have the following lenses: 18-55; 55-250; 20-35usm; 28-105 I and II; 17-40L; 70-200 f4 IS. Most of these are new; I am a recent transfer to Canon after using Nikon for a number of years. I am recently retired and my eyesight is not super sharp. I recently bought a 7D and am using only the rear lcd, virtually eliminating the control panel. Cost wise I can not justify the 5/II or 5/III. My thoughts turned to adding a nice used 5D for a camera that is FF. After reading, I discovered that the lcd is terrible and the camera is hard to hold compared to the newer ones. In addition, I am thinking of a 50/1.4 or 85/1.8 for portraits and perhaps purchase a nice macro.
What I need is advise on my present selection of camera and lenses and the 5D I.
Presently, I have no specific area of interest other than portraits, family pictures, nature, and perhaps some birding. Macros are of interest.
I also have a 30D, S90; S95; and a G12 (probably more equipment than brains)

i have a 5d 1 (around here it's usually called the 5dc) and a 17-40 lives on it. i've also used the 70-200 2.8 (all three versions) on it and my 100mm L gets a lot of time on that body. All work great. I wouldn't call the LCD "terrible", it's dated and not as good as the newer ones but it does work. I leave mine off, use it to sometimes check histograms and it's fine for that. the 5d produces wonderful images.

Do not trust all you read.
5Dc is normal camera to hold and operate. IMO, better to those modern fancy film like bodies with little sensor inside, they made them small as original film bodies without thinking how people are going to press those little digital controls.
7D will have more MPs for macro compare to 5Dc.
I use zoom to review accuracy of focus on 5Dc LCD, not a big deal.
Check 5Dc viewfinder in the store, if you could find it (5D MKII, would be similar). It is large and bright, might be OK for you to use it for framing. At 1.4-1.8 is is hard to focus with original focusing screen, but if you have one of the AF points on the focusing point it is accurate most of the times.

7D is a phenomenal camera. I had that and a 85 f/1.8 and that combo is awesome, its a little long but its a great lens. BUT, the 85mm will have new life on a full frame. I LOVE the 85mm on my 5D.

Adding a 5Dc for FF is a good idea, it is one I debating on doing. In the end I sold my 7D and got a 5D MKII because I didn't need the advanced AF system that the 7D had. I do however miss the 7D body a lot because it is a better BODY (newer) then the 5D2...which means it is A LOT better of a body then the 5Dc. But since you are keeping the 7D, I say go for a 5Dc with the 17-40, 70-200, 50mm and the 85mm that would really be all the glass you need!

I would say that a 5Dc with your weak eyesight is perhaps not a good idea for portraits. I have similar problems, and find myself using my little NEX-5N more and more, partly because of the difficulty with fine focus (manual) on the 5Dc, through the viewfinder.

I found my previous 50D with Liev view was MUCH easier for manual focus, than the 5Dc viewfinder. I had similar problems with lunar shots....invariably without Live View, it was very difficult for me to see the fine focus needed with my 5Dc. It's a WONDERFUL camera in many respects, and if you have the eyes or use only AF, then I'd strongly recommend the 5Dc, but for MF with weak eyes.....not the best choice, in my honest experience.
