A backlit dragonfly in flight, heavily cropped:

Now don't get me wrong, df's are super cool and some folks have given many of the various species some really cool names too. While perhaps not the coolest name, I'm thinking this might be a horned clubtail. Hard to tell in this image, but the many other shots I took, most out of focus, suggests it might.

What I'd like to know, using my 7D with a 70-200 4.0f, how should I best set the camera up? I have back button focus already established. I'm a bit concerned about the lens as it really had a tough time focusing in on the insect, but then I tend to expect too much. The insect was about 10 feet away, give or take 40 yards! Lol! They have this maddening habit of hovering in place just so you can draw a bead on'm and then they skirt the shutter squeeze only to return back to where they once were. I recall Andrew's 5D3 workout and he got awesome results.

Nice shot, Kevan. I've only tried the elusive DF shot on two occasions. The first time, I tried following it everywhere it flew, which was probably quite a funny sight if anyone was watching me. The second time, I tried to stay focused on the spot that he would eventually fly back to, hovering right in front of me, teasing me at my inability to capture the shot.

God invented dragonflies and kingfishers just to keep us photographers' egos in check.

great shot ... I've tried both methods ... following them as the fly (only when nobody's looking though) and waiting for them to return to a pre-determined spot .. both without satisfactory results.. So Far..
