Wondering if people can help me out, a guy at work asked me to find out how much his old AE-1 System is worth. It's a set of equipment, but given the abundance of the AE1 and the decline of film cameras over the years... I just have no idea how much he should try and sell it for. You'll see from the picture below it's a decent package, just not sure of it's value because of it's age

Included :

  • Canon AE-1 Camera + Original Manual
  • Canon FD 50mm f/1.8 Lens
  • Canon FD 35mm f/2.8 Lens
  • Rokunar 100-200mm f/5.6 Lens
  • Canon Speedlite 155A Flash
  • Canon Power Winders A Grip
  • Samsonite Carrying Case w/ Custom Modeled Foam Insert

cool case but unfortunately the old AE-1 and FD lens aren't worth much, consider contributing to a charity

It's gotta be worth something though, I don't know what his expectations are but I imagine there must be a number. I don't think he'd donate it, he'd probably end up keeping it if it wasn't worth anything at all.

If the camera is in good working order and doesn't have the famous AE-1 "shutter squeak", the camera and lenses are probably worth $60-100. I'm not sure what the power winder sells for these days, and I also can't give an estimate on the case.

Checking eBay for completed listings that had a sale (price written in green, not red) is probably the best idea. Just make sure you look up the lenses with the same max aperture as yours, not just the same focal length.

Some FD lenses are worth some money - especially the SSC ones.

If he gets more than $75 for everything, he's done well.

could he barter with a school for use of their big printers? Thats the best I have ever seen anyone get for similar packages, I wouldn't give him more than 100 bucks if I was buying but frankly I am not and most people are done buying film ANYTHING.

If it was mine I would keep it or look to trade for something someone else had that they didn't value much but I wanted. Like access to a big printer at a college.

FD lenses are somewhat in demand by mirrorless shooters, AE-1 bodies aren't so much but I still see people using them here and there so there has to be some demand for them.

Problem is that there is so much of this stuff available that the prices are going to be low. I've still got a whack of old lenses along with several Canon bodies. They are worth more to me than the few dollars one could get for them in today's market. I know the OP wanted to hear more than this but the reality of it is that you have been given the straight goods here. You can ask anything for it but the reality is you are probably looking south of 100.00.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.
