This one is not really a macro. It's what I try to shoot for target practice when the birds are making themselves scarce. The BG is OOF coconut fronds against the blue sky.

20D + 400 5.6L, 1/640 sec, f/8, ISO 400

I don't know the name of this bug, but this shows how thin the DOF of a macro lens is when shot wide open at close distance - 300D + 100 f2.8 USM macro, 1/100 sec, f/2.8, ISO 100, hand held, in available light:

Well pic#1 is one of the best DIFs (dragons in flight) I've seen . Much better than I've managed to date. Excellent. What mode did you have the camera in for pic#1?
#2 is difficult because of the DOF- think you might have been better off going up to iso 800 or something similar and smaller aperture.

#1 is as Brian says, one of the best DF's in flight posted here. Well done. For some reason I cannot see #2 - any ideas?

Thanks for the comments, Brian.

In number 1, I used my flying bird setting - AI servo centerpoint, Av priority, no EC. It took a lot of tries, as these little critters are difficult to frame in the VF because of their erratic flight pattern.

For No. 2, I plead guilty to playing with a very narrow DOF. I wanted to check if I can AF the lens accurately while hand held and wide open at this close distance. Of course, for the serious shots, I go to f/16 - f/22 and use a tripod, remote switch and a slave flash...:)

Regards,

Romy

That dragonfly is fantastic. Flying bugs are very difficult to capture well, but you did it.
