Negative SEO ?

I was poking through my Google Analytics data when I noticed a bunch of referrals that were listed as coming from "www.************/BuyF​acebookShares?"

Now I certainly didn't create whatever link this is supposed to represent and don't have anything to do with the associated site.

I'm wondering: is this simply random link making in the wilderness of the internetz ? Or could it possibly be Negative SEO action taken by a competitor (creating links on spammy sites with spammy anchor text pointing to a site with the aim of devaluing / de-indexing it ) ?

Do most of you monitor your backlinks for such things especially given the apparent possibility of the effectiveness of this tactic ?

I used to see all kinds of weird stuff when I monitored. Chinese government, whacky things like what you see. I was told it was a bot run amok and to forget about it.

But I'm very interested in what experts have to say about this one.

Sounds bizarre. Besides, why buy a falling stock? Go short.
