Hello folks,

I need to buy a 1.4x teleconverter for Canon 70-200mm f/4 L IS. Looking at reviews etc, there seems to be mixed opinion about whether MC4 or DG/DGX are better.

Any recommendations?

Also what's the difference between DG and DGX?

Thanks a lot for any inputs!

Most of the reviewers say the DG/DGX is superior to the MC4 due to optics,
glass coatings and I believe a newer chip that offers af with more lenses.

I'm looking for one as well, but to use with the 70-300 L IS. I believe the
DGX is supposed to have the most current communication chip, but the DG is
supposed to be optically comparative.

I just received one, Kenko teleplus pro 300 1.4x, only to find that it was DOA.
So back to Keh it goes.

Good luck trying to get a deal on a used one. Probably best to get one off
the photo forums. I'm not too certain about ebay as you might wind up with
a soft copy. Most of the senior members on the reputable photo forums are
honest enough to tell you if it's a soft copy. Especially if you ask.

I got mine off ebay and its fine. You would see that most of the ebay sellers are selling the DGX right now. And the hongkong sellers are usually the cheapest... and free shipping.
No advertisement intended ;)

I had a Kenko MC7 2x and I've now got a Kenko Pro300 DGX 1.4x and the 1.4 is miles better optically than the 2x ever was. Added to the fact the 1.4x DGX allowed my Canon 100-400 L to AF on all my Canon bodies (T2i, 60D, 7D and 5D2 and 3) and reports correctly the focal length and f stop and I'd have the Pro300 DGX any day. I've not tried a 2x Pro300 DGX yet, but I have a friend who has both and assures me the IQ with the 2x isn't far off the IQ of the 1.4x but the AF speed is slowed quite a bit compared to the 1.4x. Mine cost around £120 off ebay and has been worth every penny.

Thanks for inputs.

Is there a difference between DG and DGX with respect to autofocus capability on 70-200mm f/4 L lens?

Dont think there is. I had the DGX for my 70-200F4L and it worked perfectly. I think the DG version also has no problems. But do check again just to be sure, dont completely take my word for it :)

I have the DG and it DOES NOT autofocus with the 100-400 on either the 50D or 5DMk2. You want to get the DGX ...

No surprise there, a 1.4x tc takes the 100-400 up to f8 and your two cameras will only AF up to f5.6. Your combo is not meant to AF with any 1.4x tc (although using a non reporting or taping the pins will fool the camera into trying to AF but it will never be up to much).
The OP wants a 1.4x for his f4 lens so the DG will work fine as it will only be at f5.6.

I used to have the 100-400 and I can confirm that it 'can' AF but only in brilliant light. And Roy, I really love your images on 500px, I didnt know you are a POTN member :)

Agreed ... my Tamron non-reporting DOES TRY to autofocus on both bodies with the 100-400. Success seems to depend on light level and subject.
I am going to buy a DGX and see how that works ...
