Some more pics taken using the Canon kit lens at 25mm with a 21mm extension ring F18, 1/200th. Magnification about 0.76:1.
Really need some comparison shots with the normal macro lens, but you certainly do seem to get a reasonable amount of nearly in focus background.
Seem to still have flies around :)
I'm amazed at what the kit lens can do!

Brian, with the kit lens, you have demonstrated that it's the technique not the equipment alone makes a good photo....inspiring!:)

Brian, why did you go to f18, when your data suggests that diffraction increases above f11. Nice shots by the way.

Great shots Brian. I've always felt that most of the "problems" that folks have with the kit lens is caused by the operator. I did a series of modelling type shots with a student last week, and I'm very happy with the results.

Thanks all for the comments.
Yes agree about the kit lens- think it gets a bad press but I am using it fairly shut down- guess any lens will be reasonable at F18.
Dancinec- good question about why was I using F18- I was actually after maximum DOF and figured I was not going to get much detail at that magnification anyway.
Pxl8 had made an interesting comment that the DOF for a given magnification/ aperture combination is independent of lens type, I was just trying to see if the background was more recognisable as fairly obviously with a wide angle lens the FOV is wider further away from the point of focus hence the magnification is lower than it would be with a standard lens.
Think the only thing I've proved so far is you certainly get more background in with a wider angle lens :) The downside of course if the focus point is only about 1" in front of the lens so you need pretty tame flies.
Looks like it may be useful though for taking 3-D pics of flowers etc as the closeness of the focus point seems to exaggerate the 3-D effect.
