Ok, I thought I could find a topic on this but didn't. In comparison I am assuming the 5D Mark III has the BG-E11 grip so both cameras are about the same size and weight and the you can get the 1Ds Mark III used for about the same price give or take a few hundred dollars.

Is it a no-brainer to a get the 5D Mark III or does the 1Ds still have some upsides when compared that make it worth considering?

I always like 1 series but for what 5dmk3 seems to be delivering, I will take it over 1dsmk3.

After having a 5D3 for a couple of months I wouldn't part with it for anything that's gone before, and would even be a wrench to swap it for a 1Dx. The IQ of the 22+ Mp is immense, the AF system is easy and intuitive to use and the high ISO/low light is amazing giving clean and clear photos. Add that to the ability of taking off the grip for a fairly lightweight and smaller camera, for me I'd pick the 5D3 over the 1Ds3 all day long.

The 1DS MKIII is roughly 5 years old and the 5D3 just came out.

So other than the AF, weathersealing and build the 5D3 is the winner here.

The 1DS MK III had AF issues that according to some
have not been completly corrected with the sub mirror fixes.
Said to be mirror thickness problem on early issues but I think more the
COE of the glass type.

Note - the 1D MKIII also had the same AF issues but it was only that model which was recalled on mass scale for sub mirror replacement. Both cameras had software fixes.
Some 1DS was replaced on a case by case basis when those photographers raised holly hell
because the 1D got the fix and many more got squat. Same body Same mirror Same problem.

5D3's AF is superior to 1Ds3 especially with lenses slower than f/2.8. :-)

It was the 1D Mk III that had the AF issues...NOT the 1Ds Mk III.

Just wondering since the 5D3 and 1Ds 'Mark III are almost equal in price. Personally having the 5D Mk III has been really fun and now with grip I feel comfortable again. I've had grips on all my bodies from the XTi, 50D, 5D Mk II, and now finally, as of yesterday, on my 5D Mk III. Recently picked up a classic 1v HS and its build quality blew me away though. So every once and a while I look at the 1Ds III and 1D IV. I think the 1D IV is a very different camera than the the 5D Mk III so I might consider it for birds and sports which is what it is best at.

I could have had a mint 1ds mark iii 2.5 years ago for around $3500-$3700, but did not see the image quality from it any better than my 5d2 then. Therefore, did not trade up for one.

The 1ds3 could not win over the 5d2 for me then, there is no way I would choose it over 5d3 now.

At that time 1ds for sure for its AF, built quality, faster FPS. To some it doesn't matter based on the what they shoot, for others it is big deal.

Now I agree 5dmk3 unless I can afford 1dx.:D
