The 100-400L has a ring behind the focusing ring that can be used to lock it into a given zoom setting. Mostly it's used to keep it retracted then not in use.

Anyway, I turn the ring all the way until it stops, but the lens still zooms. If I point the camera down, it will extend under its own weight.

Is this a user-serviceable problem, or an expensive one?

Thanks.

My Dad had this on his copy, and had to have it sent in to get fixed. Unfortunately I can't give you a rough price estimate as he had all sorts of other work done at the same time. The whole lot added up to several hundred (as did mine when I had it repaired - zoom ring, IS and bearings).

And you're holding the focus ring in place while you turn the locking ring?

I've read this does happen to some of the 100-400 lenses. A possible cheap fix is apparently putting a clear bike patch on the 100 end to lock it closed at least. Below is discussion about your possible issue.

Yes. It's not a new lens. I know how it's supposed to work.

Has anyone here tried the clear bike patch fix? If so what kind of patch did you use and where did you get them from? I don't know anything about these patches.

I have a 28-300L that did the same thing. I sent it to Canon's "CPS" and for a little over $100 they fixed it. It is a black rubber seal ring that was bad on mine.

Canon S100 and Canon 7D, Canon 28-300L 3.5/5.6 IS, Canon 70-200L 2.8 non IS, Canon 10-22 I'll give it a lil "l", Canon 50 1.8, LEE 10X Filter, Benro Travel Angel A-169....REI back pack, hiking boots and a photogenic black labrador
