It's winter in Australia, which means I've been noticing lovely light of late. I'm a new 7D owner and just ducked outside and saw this amazing sun peaking through a slight mid arvo haze.

I've been really drawn to photos with harsh light ( I'm not sure what to call it maybe it's vintage looking, remniscent of film days), big bokeh and blown looking highlights of late and am hoping to learn this type of look. Given I'm home alone, I only had my dog as a subject!

How did I do?

I'm a little disappointed in the sharpness. I did play with it a bit in Aperture, but didn't want to push it too far. Next time I'll be sure to shoot in RAW. I forgot this time :o

Thanks for your comment stanclark.I agree it does look like focus is on the collar (which I've only noticed since you pointed it out) but I'm pretty sure (but can't be 100% certain I was laying awkwardly on steps to shoot it) the focus was on his eyes.

Edit: Obviously the lack of sharpness would also be indicative of the focus being off. This is why it's good to get further critique, I'm hoping to learn things like this.. things that are easy to miss when looking at your own work.

if you used spot focus and aim for the eyes...I find multi spot not always reliable....

It was single point AF. At this stage (unless I can 100% be certain of what I had the focus locked on) I'd say I've missed the focus on the eyes.

I'll keep an eye (pardon the pun ha) on this next time.

You missed by not that much. Try selectively sharpening the eyes and see how it looks.

If you use the Canon software, you can check to see what your focus point was locked on.

Try using the center focus point and recomposing. I stopped letting the camera select which focus points and did it manually. Life was so much easier after I made that change :)

I didn't know the Canon SW can do that. It's been many years since I've even installed camera SW!

I selected the outer focus point manually. Are they not that accurate? I didn't let the camera select it.

I reviewed all the shots I took at the same time as the above one and then realised that the shot above was one where the nifty fifty actually had trouble locking focus on. It hunted for a few seconds. So I think that is where this shot missed the focus. In reality tho, none of them look that great as far as sharpness goes.

Thanks for all the comments. I've already learnt lots and have many things to test and think about.

Thanks everyone

In the DPP viewer ...Digital Photo Professional, click on view, and then AF Point. The pattern will show up highlighting the auto focus point used in red.
