Hey All!

I have a friend who is seeing some issues in her Win 7 laptop -- for one thing she apparently can't get the Start button to function properly.

...?

why do you assume is a virus!?
define start button. do you mean power up key
or
taskbar start button(bottom left icon) ?

I don't know -- she just says she has a problem with the Start butten, she's out of town, so I'll have to report back later!

I've been using IE9, Chrome, Firefox, and occasionally Safari on my Win7x64 machine. None of them seem perfect, but Oh Well!

This is true... more people need to think this way...

And I don't think 35.8% for FireFox, vs 38.3% for Chrome means "life support" for FireFox...

Not sure where you get your stats from but the ones i'm looking at are much different. With the new Windows phones coming out and all the new Chrome based Ultrabooks on top of the iOS and Android devices there is no chance the Firefox can hold it's ground much longer.

The day Google pulled it's funding of the project in favor of building Chrome was the day that Firefox began a slow downhill climb. Today it's one of the slowest and i'd much rather use MaxThon being far more lightweight over Firefox any day of the week. Even still without third party Plugins like NoScript the Fox is no better then IE which has similar functionality already baked into the Internet Options panel.

Pretty ironic that most users refuse to disable scripting features and then choose to run Firefox and a host of plugins that do the same thing. It just goes to show the sheep effect where many follow the advice of anyone who tries to lead them even if they are being led to slaughter. There is no future for Firefox in the mobile age with alternatives like Dolphin and while it may linger for a few more years eventually it will go the way of the dodo bird.

So, I use Chrome for my normal Facebook browser because it has the Fullscreen viewer for images. Firefox does too, and I can't get it to work on IE9 or Safari.

I'd just use a system restore point and create a new user profile. 9/10 virus scan products won't clean the virus completely anyway.

I recently fought one on my work machine. Advanced SystemCare caught what AVG had missed. I haven't played with it enough to really know it and its capabilities, but it seems effective.

Hey, thanks all!

She tried a few suggestions and got things cleared up! WhooHoo!

The System Restore is something I've done successfully, I just didn't think of suggesting it to her!

+1

Some people have too many scanners downloaded on their computer and they actually interfere with each other, allowing trojans etc in. System Restore is the #1 method that should be used to clear up problems before anything else is attempted.

I'm glad she got it cleared up, they can be real pains.

AVG used to be good but lately, it's just a memory hog. I started using Avast and my PC runs much better now.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials for all of the PC's on my home network for a few years now. I used to use Norton and McAfee, but had nothing but problems with them (slowing my system down, poor customer service for billing, interference with other applications).

It may be missing a few options, but it's worked well for me. I also use Firefox with Adblock Plus and NoScript.

By the way, the only time one of the pc's on our home network got infected with a virus was with a machine protected by Symantic Endpoint Protection.
