I bought my t2i fall of 2010,
shortly after I noticed that the rubber grip was expanding and starting to bubble out a bit in the middle.
a few months later it had expanded outside the boundaries of the indented hard plastic moulding designed to contain it.
Now it has expanded so much that there is only a small amount of rubber cement in the middle still holding it on.

Is this a common problem ?

Um... No. I would not have waited so long to exchange it for another one :(

Happened with my 60D. It was under warranty so I sent it in. Came back a week later like brand new.

Have not experienced this with my T2i which is a year old but just about every 60D floor model I see in stores has this problem. It's exactly as you state it's as if the rubber grows and is larger than the inset area for it. Has to be a glue issue which is probably covered if it's within a year of purchase.

That problem was reported on the 60d when it first came out, but never really heard of it being a problem on the T2i.

I had the rubber grip come off a bit on my old T2i. It seemed like it expanded a bit.

Hmm. My 60D is around a year old and I've taken 15,000 pictures and numerous videos with it. I have not noticed an issue with the grip yet.

The grip on the t2i finally fell off..
because it expanded in all directions at once, the interior holes tabs and groves no longer line up with the plastic body..cant even trim the excess and re-rubber cement.
My gf uses the t2i body..
so looking for a new grip I guess.

Found the grip on ebay ^

Hmmm. Where do you live. I have three cameras for a quite a while and have had no problems with the grips. I'm thinking it may be the related to excessive humidity or perhaps salt air if you live on or near the sea.

People with expanding rubber grips who own multiple bodies usually only have the problem with a single camera so i don't think it has anything to do with climate or the persons sweat etc.. more likely its just made in batches a few batches of rubber expand but most do not.

No problem with mine, and mine was fairly early in the life of the the T2i.

I've seen rubber react to petroleum in this way before. If not a glue problem, then possibly someone had a petroleum based lotion on his or her hand, and it rubbed in never to recover? The rubber I've seen this happen to was able to recover when the petroleum source was removed (the floor liner of my old VW bus -- bubbled up 8" between the front seats b/c of a leaky gas can, and 1 week later, it was flat again).

But it's also a natural reaction rubber of this kind has, since it consists of very long molecules it expands when heat or certain chemicals are applied to it but if it expands beyond it's limits then it cannot contract back to it's molded stage again.
