...which almost killed my wife ...who has arachnophobia and would have had a heart attack had she seen this guy in our downstairs bathroom. It was easily 1.5 inches in diameter and well pretty intimidating. Don't get me wrong, only two spiders which truly scare me. The dangerous ones and those I don't know pfft about! :D (Honestly I am a spider hugger for the most part)

Sorry it's not as artistic as you expected. I was 2 sheets to the wind balancing on a milk crate and the sink with a 5dMKII, 100mm 2.8 IS and 580 EX thinking I could easily get this down no problem. I did sharpen and post process it as usual :D Ah when she sees this post in the morning I am probably gonna have to fumigate the house .. sigh...

So if you can help me out, what type of spider is this? Thank you.

From the looks of it, it might be a Hobo spider, which is frequently found in Washington State and is of the funnel-web family. (NOT the same as the Australian ones though!)

When we lived in Olympia, my wife would get bitten on occasion from this thing and have local swelling and skin blisters. Not a nice guy to be around!

Here is some info from King County on the Hobos: http://www.kingcounty.gov …inverts/hobo-spiders.aspx (external link)

It looks very much like a Hobo spider except it has the dark rings around the legs. Hobo spiders don't have these rings. Definitely a brown funnel web spider of some sort. But not dangerous like the Hobo.
Tarheeldragon is right; Hobo spiders don't make very good neighbors. I've been bitten by Hobo spiders on two occasions. And I wish all I had gotten was local swelling and blisters. Both of my bites stayed with me for months; nerve damage for years.
Bottom line - I don't think hosing your house down with poison is necessary. Just don't use pile your clothes on the floor. Hobo spiders don't climb vertical surfaces very well but they won't pass up a nice warm sweater :-)
Good job on the photo.

Thanks tarheeldragon. I started looking into whether it was a hobo and found this useful guide:

After reading it, it is most definitely a Callobius severus. Pretty harmless for the most part :) wiki photo:

Thanks everyone for your comments on the photos.

No no - you put me in the ballpark for narrowing it down. With tens of thousands of species its tough to narrow one down without some direction. Thanks again for the input!
