Sony RX100 - S100 "killer" with 1" sensor

Looks like some good competition for Canon's S100.

It isn't going to be "from Nikon series". The Nikon 1-series CMOS is NOT manufactured or designed by Sony, but rather manufactured by Aptina and designed by Nikon. The size will be about the same (if the rumor is true), but I doubt they will have the embedded PD AF that the Aptina-sourced Nikon product has.

I agree, though, that it should (if priced competitively) pull quite a bit of sales away from the S100.

It could also knock the J1 and V1 around too. The thing missing from the 1-series is good optics. If the lens in this camera is up to the standards of past Zeiss/Sony colaborations, you could see this as a huge kick in the nuts to Nikon!

Thanks for correcting my multiple typos in that sentence. I meant to say "like the Nikon 1 series". It's 20MP, too, so that's a dead giveaway that they aren't the same sensor.

I kinda wondered why Nikon didn't make a 7000 series camera with the 1 series sensor. That would be a nice setup.

It's crazy, but it has been a standard way of measuring sensors for decades.

Crazy math - reminds me of the voodoo used to determine women's clothing sizes.

Cripes, even the diagonal is well short of an inch!

Damn, been deciding on whether I wanted to take a leap to a mirrorless, smaller format system camera, or go with a marvelous P&S like the s100 for some time now... (carrying a dSLR all the time just ain't feasible).

Guess I'll have to wait a bit longer and see how this little guy ends up!

But I don't think this is an S100/S90/S95 killer at all. The price bracket is just too different, especially form the S95 refurbs and such. Way diff price bracket.

However, I think it probably WILL impact sales of the G1x. Imho.

Case in point, I am now getting the RX100 (whereas I've been waiting for a G1X price drop)

I adore it, i think its a great looking little camera

Not everyone needs/wants a DSLR but wants better picture quality.....and not everyone wants something as bulky as a mirrorless camera either.... This seems to fit that niche...

The samples at DPReview are pretty encouraging for it being a stunner

I'd prefer to plop down $650 for the RX100 than I would $800 for the G1X.

It's all about performance. Neither the G1X nor the S100 do it for me at their price points. The Fuji X10 does. The RX100 might, but it will need to be impressive in real life. As for the price, unless it is a monster hit I would expect it to be selling for $500 by Black Friday.

Technology moves fast, but not drop-the-price-point-by-$150 fast. As long as sony includes stereo mics and good AF during video as per their sony point and shoot line (hx100, hx9v etc) they will have a very strong product.
