My first photo of a bird - a hawk?

I've always wanted to go birding but never had the time. But when I saw this on my backyard fence, I couldn't resist and grabbed my camera. It had just finished feeding on a smaller bird and was defending against the other family members, so it didn't seem to notice me as I crept closer:

Yes, it's a hawk, but I can't tell you which one I'm afraid as I don't know the hawks over there very well.

it looks like a red tailed hawk to me.
