Long Wait For Canon 70-200 f/4

I ordered a Canon 70-200 f/4 from www.technikdirekt.de (external link) on 28th October and
am still waiting for them to fulfil the order!

Today they told me in an email: "Unfortunatly we are still not able to indicate you an exact date for delivery... due to a general shortage of goods the respective producer was not able to deliver".

That means I'm going to lose out on the Euro 100 cash back offer which expires at the end of Dec. (The offer was with the Canon 20D I bought from Technik earlier in the year and which was dispatched in good time). Damn!

I'll wait a while longer because the price is still very attractive: Euro 639 as against a list price of Euro 901 (Stg 607) on www.dabs.com (external link) (They're out of stock too).

Anyone else here having trouble sourcing a 70-200 f/4? It's a sweet lens by all accounts and I'm reluctant to go for an independent.

Carrigman,
Ireland

I ordered one from Adorama last Sunday and got it on Wednesday. And I'm in Canada so it had to go through customs.

FWIW.

Without knowing anything about teknikdirekt, I'd say that that's the price you pay for not wanting to pay the price. Anyone who's offering a price too good to be true has a hook somewhere, whether it's the "extras" you need to buy, or an inability to supply what they're offering at the price they're offering.

Get this. I was in New York in October and intended purchasing the 70-200 from either B&H or Adorama. Bargain price as against Europe. Off I went one morning only to find both stores closed for the week I was there due to a jewish holiday! (Both are owned by hasidic jews). Grrrrrrr! If looks as if the gods have decided I will not have the lens. I considered importing it from the States but with all the duties and stuff I'd have to pay it would not be worth it.

I ordered one from warehouse express (uk) on Tuesday and received an email saying they were out of stock - tried Park cameras and a few other places, without any luck. Looks like I may well lose out on the £70 cashback . . . .

Too true. Lesson learned.

I'd had order for one with Warehouse Express since 15th November with no indication of when Canon would deliver ...just cancelled my order yesterday as I bought samdring's mint condition used one instead - his price was better than buying new, claiming cash-back, and claiming VAT back (which I can do). So that's one less person waiting in line with Warehouse Express when they do get stock from Canon. ;)

A.J.Purdy also told me they 'might' be getting a delivery of them this week - but I've no idea how valid that information was.

Maybe Canon might be introducing a new IS version?

I have no 'insider' knowledge of such a thing, but maybe that's why there is a shortage - Canon running down stocks.

Just a thought.

I don't know if that would make me really happy...or really sad. :)

Why don't you try Kerso on eBay, or contact him by PM on this forum? You may get lucky, and he's a very reliable trader.

I know of two people who have bought this lens in recent times in the UK. Both of them had lengthy (several months) delay, which was simply put down to extremely high demand.

Cheers,

Simon.

I am obviously a bit dim. I have this lens, albeit used/secondhand, which I bought from a gentleman in the US a few months ago. It cost me less than £300.00 including shipping and any Duty/VAT. It is in pristeen condition and I am very happy with it.
Rather than wait an eternity why don`t people take advantage of the B&S on FM or the marketplace on this Forum ? There have been loads for sale on both sites and buying from this Forum, or FM, more or less guarantees a good deal.
Just my thoughts.

They told me that about the 24-105L, It must be their standard practise, to try and get your order.
I always phone and check item is stock before ordering.

I've just cancelled my order for the Canon 70-200 f/4 from Technikdirekt and have ordered a Sigma f/2.8 70-200 from them instead (it's in stock). Great reviews of this lens on the net - on a par with the Canon 2.8 but at a lot less cost - and a good price from Technik too (Euro 849). So, come on Santa and deliver in time for Xmas. I've been a very good boy all year.

The 2.8 is a fine lens at a good price. I might have suggested looking at the 100-300 f4 as well. Now that really can be quite exceptional.

I actually think you'll find the 2.8 to be a blessing in disguise because in all ways other than size it's a more practical and useful lens in my book.
