I've had my trusty 20D forever now it seems and just recently picked up a heavily used 1DMk2, mostly because of the exposure bracketing for HDR.
I have loooked hard at the specs for the t series rebels T1i,T2i, T3i and T3, and the T2i seems the best of the bunch, at least to me.
I must admit though I really like the two dial system in the 20D, I also like the fact the file size is only 8Mp vs 18 for the T2i.
I don't really plan on giant blowups of my images.
I'm also intrigued by the Magic lantern software which can boost exposure bracketing up to 9 images for HDR.
I mostly shoot wildlife and land and seascapes.
Opinions?

I have a T3i and IQ is excellent, but fps (same as T2i) is kind of low for sports and wildlife at 3.7 fps...Also I don't like not having a wheel on the back...The joystick button controler is usable but will take some "getting used to"....And the viewfinder is small and dim, due to the penta-mirror....Most everything else about the camera I have no compaints about....Great value for the price.:)

I have the T1i and love it. although the T3i has some upgrades, they aren't enough to get me to upgrade. The T3 is a stripped down T3i, but for what you are describing any of the first 3 would work great. You might aslo want to look into the Canon Loyolty program, maybe un apgrade to a discounted pre-owned may work for you.

It all depends on whether you judge a camera on its potential to generate images.

These images came from a T2i:

From actually using a T2i, it's a useful camera even when the subjects don't hold still.

Where any of those shots HDR, they don't like like it (which is meant as a complinent).

You won't go wrong with the IQ and ISO performance of the T2i over the 20d, its the ergonomics that may take some getting used to. Since you didn't mention the 7d or 60d I can only assume you've played with the T2i and are ok with it.
The 60d thru CLP is less than a T2i brand new so that's an option to get xxd ergonomics. It has Magic Lantern support as well.

Between T3i and T2i I would get T3i for the swivel screen alone - I've used it many times, especially for video, it's easily worth a small initial price diff.

You do have a choice on file size, you don't have to take photo's (with the T2i) at full resolution.

if you don't care about the swivel screen and a few features the T2i seems to be the best value but whatever model you get use shoot in the highest resolution (RAW) and downsize after processing

The 7D was great, but seemed a bit expensive. I wasn't sure about the 60D, as I heard it was moving more to a cross between the rebel and D series.
I suppose the major difference between the 60D and T2i would be the autofocusing isn't it?

The UI is a major difference.

User Interface.

I wouldn't go back to a rebel from an XXD. I have a 20D and a 450D, I prefer my 450D because of the features it has (live view etc...), but I much prefer the handling and size of the 20D.
