Should I get a new lense?

Hey everybody, I got my Rebel XT 2 months ago and I've been using the kit lense that came with it. I don't do much specialized photography, mainlky portraits and urban shots. Would I benefit from a new lense, and if so, which one? (My budget is under $200, but anything above that might be accomodated.)

Thanks!

I would reccommend sticking with that kit lens for a while, its not too bad. I would save up a few more bucks and go for something like the 28-135 IS, good focal legth and has IS. is it 200 Canadian bucks, US, etc?

50 1.8 is always a great option for around 100$ as well

The kit lens is not bad at all realy. Maybe if you have a little bit of cash get a 50mm or something like that.

There's no way you can afford a significantly better wide zoom similar to your kit lens so don't worry about that one just yet.
You could easily afford one of the cheaper telezooms if you want to do sports, animals or anything else you want to bring closer.
Then there is the 50/1.8 option mntioned allready. That one is interesting because it shows what a lens with very shallow depth of focus and high image quality can do for you! :):):)

50mm f/1.8 Mk II & if you want a cheap zoom that won't be a total disgrace, the Tamron 70-300 LD with macro 1:2 as well. There is your $200 gone & you now have a range from 18 to 300 (with a small break from 55 to 70) & macro options & a cracking good prime in the 50mm for the portraits & low light etc.

At some point later you will upgrade from all these lenses if the style of photography for that lens is the route you want to go, but until then while you're getting your feet wet it's something to consider :)

Just returned after many years hiatus from this forum. I was a bit of a prat before, if I ever offended you, I'm sorry

Get the flash, a 420EX can be had for under $200 or if you save just a few more dollars the newer 430EX.
