yeah I can see some $350ish online prices.. but here in Australia most of them are around $500+ if you want to purchase them from the store... so this $91 is amazingly cheap!

for a photographer who isn't a pro, and just wants to use grip for event photography so its easier to take portraits + better battery life.. i dont really mind if its plastic or alloy.. since i won't be putting it through a test.

I'm usually very careful with my gear and baby it everywhere I go lol

Id love to know where the store is pulling that number for a piece of magnesium alloy with a joystick. I mean really...I know its a good grip but I'm starting to feel like numbers are just being pulled out of a hat at this point :P At that price they could at least throw in one or two extra batteries.

Price of everything is just going up, sadly. It's economics. A bunch of number crunchers sit there weighing what's the "optimum" price they can set the grip at to make the most profit.

I can't speak for the 3rd party grips and I'm sure they will work well, this being my 4th Canon grip, it truly feels like they put in extra effort in making this one better. I used to want to buy the cheapest thing available. Now, I'm willing to pay a "reasonable price" for some quality. There are hard working people hired by Canon to design, make, package, ship these grips. I want them to have a job, to get paid and have a decent quality of life, much like what I get to enjoy on a daily basis. If buying Canon helps support the working grunts at Canon, then I'm all for it.

But "reasonable price" is subjective and everyone has draw their line in the sand differently so YMMV. I, however, don't and won't support gouging. But obviously some stores can get away with it because there are some with less patience than 2 year olds and with more money than brains. :D Good for them though.

No. This is absolutely incorrect. It is inflation caused by the weakness of the U.S. Dollar. Our government (USA) and others around the world have gone on insane money printing sprees in the last few years. In the USA TRILLIONS of new dollars (paper money and virtual money that is just numbers in bank computers) have been created.

So what happens when trillions of new dollars are created, literally out of thin air? All the existing dollars go down in value and have less purchasing power, and prices go up. All of those bailouts and stimulus programs, cash for clunkers, etc. have a VERY REAL price. You are now paying that price with every purchase you make with US Dollars.

Inflation is not a natural or normal part of economics.

Although im not that concerned about battery life to be honest, i think a 5D3 takes 850 - 1000 pictures on its normal battery once fully recharged.. I mostly do birthday parties, so 850+ pictures are more than enough for me. Main reason for me buying a grip would be to balance out the weight when my 85L is on.. its currently front heavy, also the vertical shooting would be much easier!

Yeah, I like the handling of the grip when used with a heavier lens, but don't minimize the battery life effect. If you use IS lenses, that will use your battery significantly faster.

Gripped 7D, gripped, full-spectrum modfied T1i (500D), SX50HS, A2E film body, Tamzooka (150-600), Tamron 90mm/2.8 VC (ver 2), Tamron 18-270 VC, Canon FD 100 f/4.0 macro, Canon 24-105 f/4L,Canon EF 200 f/2.8LII, Canon 85 f/1.8, Tamron Adaptall 2 90mmf/2.5 Macro, Tokina 11-16, Canon EX-430 flash, Vivitar DF-383 flash, Astro-Tech AT6RC and Celestron NexStar 102 GT telescopes, various other semi-crappy manual lenses and stuff.

As long as it cannot be created with the push of a key in Washington... which the last time I checked, is not the way cows and goats are made, so yeah that would work. It is kinda hard to carry cows and goats in your pocket though.

Ya know I just had a crazy idea...What say you to that shiny stuff that people have used as money for over 5000 years. You think that could work?

There is much more to the equation than just this. For example, fuel surcharges that were added to invoicing across the board after fuel spike way up a few years ago has raised prices across the board. I work in the software industry for transportation, and the amount of fuel surcharges added along each leg of goods moving to the consumer is well outside the cost of actual fuel, it has become a "tax" of sorts that the consumer now pays, even though fuel prices fluctuate. This adds to bottom line to all parties involved in the shipment of said goods. This is just one aspect of price increases. There is no simple answer for the price increases: futures markets, international markets, the value of the dollar, etc are all just cogs in the big price wheel.

Yeah... that's only a small part of it. It still boils down to economics. If no one is willing to buy... then they can't sell it for higher, regardless of inflation. Right?

This is just Capitalism at work. This is the world most of us choose to live in versus the alternative. Fortunately as consumers, we have the choice to buy or not buy. It's just a matter of our "wants" that makes us complain about things being too expensive.

There has been instances of the tightening wheel stripping the knurling on the screw and not being able to loosen the screw holding the grip to the body. Not a biggie unless you later on choose to go "gripless", then it becomes a major biggie!

I can absolutely confirm that this will happen to Canon factory grips too, as I did with mine on a 30D.

It's not the knurling, but a small cheap penny pinching plastic gear cog that canon use.

funny how some people think just because something is made in a specific country it isn't worth having.

Plastic construction is actually a plus for me. I have arthritis in my hands and find the weight of the 5D3, when combined with something like the 24-70L, quite painful after a while. Any weight saving is therefore a good thing.

Also, I had a cheap grip on a backup 550D and gave it a good workout with absolutely no probs. I have a Canon grip on my 7D and that has also been trouble-free.

Since you are in the US, it's spelled not spelt... (sorry couldn't resist! :))
