Im going on a cruise this month and Ive never been on one before. Its a round trip with only one stop for two nights in Bermuda. I want to take my 5DII along and only use it on the ship. I will have a P&S for using off the boat but want some nice quality images of the boat and our activities on it. Is this a bad idea?

Yes, but ask the captain not to go near where the Bermuda Triangle is, you might just lose it and the insurance (if you have one) won't give you the money for a new one, they will say, null and void, you knew the risk :/

Is your 5DII insured? If not, insure it. Costs only peanuts and you won't have to worry about this stuff except for maybe losing the images that are on the card if your camera is stolen.

Thanks. I was asking more in the "Is it going to get stolen?" kind of thing.

If you enjoy taking photos, and it will enhance your enjoyment of the trip, then yes, take it.

If it was me, I would take mine.

It won't get stolen. Theft on cruise ships is similar, in a broader sense, to theft on an airplane. The thief has to deal with holding stolen property in a cabin that isn't his and can be inspected without warning. The fourth amendment doesn't apply to tbe room, only to your person.

Plus, when you get off the boat your baggage goes through customs if you were in a foreign country.

Finally, the rooms have safes.

Thank you. bw!

Mike, I appreciate the input. Thanks!

Think I should rent a 24-70 or a 24-105?

I would not take a 5D. I just came back from vacation and used a Fuji X10. It was nice carrying a nice light camera around.

sure, you can use a cell phone but if you want the best pics take the best camera. Cruise ships have lockable room safes. Bermuda is safe

I took mine with me on my cruise recently, and my only regret I have is that I didn't take it off the ship. I took pictures walking around the ship, and some landscape type shots too. Have fun, can't wait to go on my next cruise.
