Hello there, I have just picked up a canon eos rebel xti with these three lenses: 1. sigma ex 10-20mm 1:3.5 Dc hsm. 2. canon zoom lens ed 75-300mm 1:4-5.6. 3. canon zoom lense ef-s 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 II. I am looking for an all around lens to take with me when i travel, and have those days were I'm only gonna have room for one lens. My price range can go up to roughly 800.00 range I'm brand new into photography but already love it. I appreciate it :D

The 75-300mm range isn't a good enough "all around" zoom lens, focal length wise?

Why not the Canon EF 55-250 then?

What kind of photography (buildings, landscapes, wildlife)? You already have a decent walkaround lens in the 18-55mm.

Well Ive heard that the 75-300 is one of Canon's least desirable lenses, just not that good. The 55-250 is good value for money and its pretty sharp too.

Don't buy a ton of lenses right off the bat, learn on the ones you have now :)

You could grab a EF 50mm f/1.8 II - its dead cheap, a fast little prime that is light - perfect to carry around if you just want to bring one lens and your camera. Good for portraits, decently sharp. Its not called the Thrify-Fifty or the Nifty-Fifty for nothing though.

I have that lens...While certainly not an "L" lens, It's a pretty good lens IQ-wise...Shoot some pictures with it and see if it measures up to your standards...It just might...If not then you can upgrade.

The 18-55 non-IS isn't all that bad, just stop it down to f7.1 if you want. The 75-300 is less desirable. Neither lens is outstanding in what it will do. You could sell both for a total cash influx of about $150-175 after fees and shipping and add it to your budget.

Canon 15-85
Canon 18-200
Canon 17-55

etc

Look at the reviews in the recent issue of PhotoPlus Canon Edition (UK mag). The Tamron 18-270 PZD (second generation) came in Best in travel zooms. It was also in Popular Photography's holiday gift list a few months back. We had the first generation as walkarounds on our 7Ds. The second generation is much improved.

I don't have an XTi but the one lens I have (in fact I have two copies of it) that I always have with me is the EF 28-135 IS ... not too wide, not that long a zoom but a very versatile lens with that length ... and it has IS and is not that expensive. Also it is not that heavy! If I want WA, I have a wider lens and if I need longer, I have those two but as for the longer lenses, they can be a bit heavy after a while.

I don't hesitate using it on any of my bodies when I need it!

You probably read comments from people who have not had experience with the lens and are just judging from the fact that it is a 'megazoom'.

As you can see, I have it and I also have lenses which cover its range, except for the widest part.

Here are some comparisons:

18-200 vs 70-200L MkII

Three way comparison at 50mm

IMAGE: http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e66/MakisM/USA%202011/New%20York%202011/50mmf8allthree.jpg

It is a very sharp lens and very good value for the price.

It has a bit of Chromatic Aberration (CA) which is corrected by the program which imports the RAW images. It does not show but under special circumstances at 100% magnification.

^ I am pretty sure the comment was around the 18-55 lens in response to this post, and not the 18-200.

The Tamron 18-200mm (external link)is the least expensive "all in one" lens.

Canon makes an 18-200mm lens (external link)that is more expensive and is stabilized. That lens generated these images.

I have an xTi and have used both the Canon 18-135mm and 15-85 mm lenses with it. Both make great travel lenses and have pretty good image quality. I like the 15-85 better for landscapes and it has shaper image quality, but the 18-135 is a nice little lens that covers a wide range.
