Will this be usable for handheld video?
I'm guessing it doesn't have IS, but since it's so small and light, maybe it would be easier to hold the camera still?

Handheld:

I'm confused on how to update the pancake lens through the 5D3. I don't have a CD drive so do I need to go out and get one now or can I download the update? Is it just regular firmware update? I just re-bought the pancake since I had sold it a few months back.

It's a firmware update. You load the update to your CF card and then use the update lens firmware option. It should be available for download from Canon's support page.

Thanks Virto, so it's just a regular 5D3 update? If so, I don't gotta buy a CD/DVD drive woo. lol :p

Well, no, it's a firmware update just for the lens, but only certain cameras can install them - the 5D3 and 1DX. Owners of other cameras will need to ship the lens to Canon, who will update the firmware for free.

wait so do I load it the same way, the firmware for the 40mm into my CF card and stick it into the 5D3 and do it's regular update?

Why not go to the Canon website and have a read, wouldn't that be quicker than asking here and waiting for a reply ?

cause I find navigating Canon's website pretty hard. I actually get a quicker answer here since I'm at work and just want it to be short and simple and pretty blunt. I'm impatient when it comes to self reading. xD

Just got my lens this weekend. Didn't get to go out to take any shots but got a couple in studio. Top one was taken at f9 and the bottom was f2.8 both shot on tripod ISO 100 Shutter 200th. Loving this lens so far. Not a doubt this is worth the $150 I spent.

As some of you might know.. i bought the 40mm but returned it and got the 50mm 1.4.. now i'm thinking about getting it instead of the 28mm 1.8, it's a price thing for me, i can't afford it but i need a smaller mm, on a crop it's differeance is 16mm between the 50mm and the 40mm.. will it be enough to justify a buy?
Is 16mm really that much? the 28mm is 45mm compared to 50mm's 80.. thats 35mm differance, it seems huge.
But 16mm?

What do you guys think?
If i got the 50mm 1.4.. is buying the 40mm panncake overflow?

The 40 is an odd FL for a prime on crop. It is either a long-ish normal or a very short telephoto. Something in the 28-35mm range would be a better addition to your 50 and 85, IMO.

But, it is a cool lens! ;)

I found even going from 17mm to 15mm on my 60D made a difference so i think 16mm wider will be quite a big difference.
what are all those figures about in the second paragraph? Where does the 16mm difference come from. 50 - 28 is 22mm, thats quite a difference.
I do agree that 40 and 50 are a bit too close. I know each lens can have its uses but id go for at least 35 or lower to make a real difference.

50mm - 40mm = 10mm x 1.6 crop factor = 16mm
