With the hood i believe it defeats the purpose of a Pankcake lens.... But that's only my view.... if you buy the lens it's your lens, do as you please.... but i'll say this... this little bad boy is amazing!

That's what I was thinking...I'm a HUGE fan of hoods in general (the one on my 16-35L II literally has never been off since I've owned the lens), but I'm buying the Shorty40 because I want a small/inconspicuous lens. The hood would defeat both purposes...plus, from everything I've seen you can try as you might and this lens won't flare, so optically, there's no advantage to the hood.

Besides lens shading and reducing flare, I use hoods to protect the lens. The tiny hood on the EF 40mm isn't going to provide much shading, and because it is threaded into the front element, I wonder how the STM AF would react to a direct impact with the hood installed.

My brothers 40 arrived this past Wednesday and we noticed that it sounded different than mine while focusing.
He let me know today that it now sounds like its trying to focus but it won't focus at all...
I haven't kept up with this thread in a bit. Has anyone else had any problems? Mine still works fine...

Yeah, plus the lens seems to be incredibly flare-resistant, so a hood seems to have very little benefits.

Good point on the impact, I didn't realize it was threaded to the front element...

Where did you find one? I've been trying to get my hands on one but Gmarket doesn't list it yet.

On Danawa.co.kr. A friend of mine has dealt with them a lot, but I haven't yet...I'm going to try and ask him to order it for me :)

i picked one up locally in china for ~$215 after the exchange rate, so far im very happy with the lens. mine came with the lens case and hood, but the hood is pointless, its basically just a filter with no glass. dont bother buying the canon hood.

Was the hood metal or plastic?

I think for now I'm just going to use the filter adapter for the 50/1.8 II as a hood for my 40 when it needs one. It doesn't vignette even on full frame.

I just picked one up in London. Paid full price for it (£229) but really needed it today, as i explained above.
First impressions are mixed. Love the size and feel of it, but not blown away by IQ at f/2.8 yet.

Time will tell. I have 7 days to return it if its a dud, although i think im probably being picky.
