It seems like this lens doesn't give any resistance when the auto focus switch is on does that mean this lens let's you override the focus with out damaging auto focus motor...

No, because nothing is happening other than the focus ring is going round. The actual focus isnt changing

and so when switched to MF - and half-pressing the shutter - this allows for quasi-FTM, is that right?

No, switching to MF gives you full MF.

Seriously, if owning this lens NOW gives you more freedom with your dslr due to its size, then I think your kidding yourself. Slr cameras are big for a reason. This lens was a stupid introduction by canon. They could have really put the $$$$$ to a better more flexible lens than dropping10mm from a 50mm.

Sounds like you have some form of personal investment in this discussion. Why get so upset about other people having a different view than you?

That the lens sells well should be a clear proof that you are wrong. A lens that sells well can't be a stupid introduction by Canon since prio 1 is to sell and make money...

Yes, I've already said that it does.
That comment is about using AF, with manual override and not switching the lens to MF, not using MF on its own.

but the 40 is still only 2.8, you buy a lens for a reason. why buy a f/1.4 if you aint gunna use it at 1.4?

All these people getting 1.4 lens and going oh ah...1.4 and then they dont use it there???????????

Like ferrari owners that only stay in first gear and lap the main streets. the car is meant to run top speed like a 1.4 lens is meant to be used at 1.4

But a f/1.4 lens often can more than just f/1.4.

Just like a Ferrari is more than just the top speed.

For some reason, you are so worried about what other people think and do. Why? What does it matter to you?

On a 5D3 - with the firmware updated...

Interesting... sounds like a firmware fix should deal with it

lets track what EOS bodies it has happened to...

wow - I had a 'duh' moment - in my original question I wrote MF instead of AF at the beginning...

...there are many times I don't bring my camera someplace because it's awkward, heavy and starts to annoy me after a couple of hours. So I just use my iPhone to take pics. The 40 is a game changer for me because I will be far more apt to take my camera. And I've always felt if I am going to take my camera then I am going to take a good lens... now I can do that, shoot sharp with a flexible focal length, even reasobably fast. All with minimal size weight. This lens is a home run.

I agree!

Ah right, in that case yes, in AF mode half pressing the shutter button will allow manual override and you can rotate the focus ring.

The sleeping lens has happened to me once so I might return until they find the fix or cause.

This thing looks goofy as hell on my gripped 5D3.

I've got a 50mm f/1.8. 35mm f/2, and now a 40mm f/2.8. I'll have to decide on what route I want to go with.
