Yeah, I'm leaning that way as well. It's too bad the pancake doesn't have a f/2 itself or it'd be perfect. I kept the 50mm around after buying the 35mm solely because it was so cheap even though I rarely used it. Now that I have the 40mm, might be time to finally sell it off.

Agreed...I would have gladly paid twice as much for the 40 if it was a stop faster...but, such is life! Yeah, I kept doing that too, keeping the 50 1.8 around because it was so cheap, but then I realized that you can get a lot of great lenses for not much more money (85 1.8, 100 f2, 40 2.8, etc)...the Nifty is great for beginners and to find out if you even like shooting with a prime, but it doesn't take long to scrape up a bit of extra cash and get a lens that'll be truly impressive in all respects.

Sigh.

Mine is not arriving 'till friday.

Heading out on a vacation sun - thinking this is what's going. On my de-gripped rebel, it should be a nice small package.

I wish this lens was a tad faster, although I am sure that would no longer make it a small tiny 'pancake'. If it were f/2 I would be all over it. At f/2.8 though, it is hard for me even at $200 :p

I shall wait for a sale/rebate/used for $150! :D

Making it as close to a "normal" lens as you're going to get...

I'm so trying to find problems with this lens but the I more I use it I'm liking! I tested the lens with low light, it wasn't superman fast but It didn't hunt and it was spot on. I took a picture in a dark room of my nephews face while he was near the computer monitor. The Nifty hunted for his face! I have the L fever so I'm giving myself excuses to buy it, if the 35L was ultra sharp at f1.4 and not the f2 I would be on it. I have a few month till my Disney World trip so I'll keep playing with the lens.

I found the nifity good for portraits and usable but in the same space the 40 makes it a little easier. I wish I had the 5D3 in my gear list lol

I'll be going to Disney world and universal with my nephews in January so I'll be very interested with what you decide and how things turn out. Please post up your decision and results!

I had the same issue....drove me crazy. Finally returned it for another one, and so far so good. No problems.

Yes, I've had the same happen a couple of times on my 7D. I got the lens last friday. Switching the camera off/on didn't help as far as I remember as well. Had to turn/remove the lens then it was ok again. What's Your camera?

On Lensrental forum they are discussing this "sleep" issue as well, link below

I'm with you, although I believe it can be made, just like the voitlander. I kinda lost all interest in this lens once reality set in. The 35 and 50 are at least a stop faster, and plenty small. I would gladly pay a hundred more for a stop faster...

Cool, thanks for the reply. I have never really messed with Clarity (LR noob) and it really enhances the picture, WOW!

Thanks again.

No problem.
The Clarity slider in LR4.1 can be a bit strong so i tend to keep it lower than with LR3, but actually pushing it right up gives a nice effect on the right image.

Thanks all for the comments. One thing i would say is that for the above shots my 50mm would have been too long, and there was no need to go faster so the 40mmm worked out fine.

Too bad its only 2.8. Judging by the amount of glass used it does not look like it lets a lot of light through. Looks a bit like pinhole cap.

I wonder what will be the next STM prime.

It doesn't need much glass to let in light, since the required aperture size is directly related to the focal length. The 50/1.8 also manages with a very small front element.

A 400mm tele needs a large opening since it has to be scaled with the longer focal length.

But for really wide lenses, the front element needs also to be made much larger, because of the need of extra lens elements to handle the big curvature in a wide lens.

(snip'n paste from lens sample thread)

Un-boxed my Hotcake about 30 minutes ago ;)

I crouched precariously in my neighbors flower garden for this wide-open SOOC (but cropped) shot.

Focus point was on the upper stamen, but with my shaky body it looks like I got a petal also

I like how compared to the 50 1.8 - our MFD is 6 or 7 inches closer ;)
Will have to give myself a Raynox macro filter or ext. tube for Christmas
