This outta silence those who kept saying the 40 would be perfect for mirrorless, despite many, many people explaining the whole flange distance deal.
Congrats, your pancake is now a cupcake.

With the 20 1.7 it is tiny. This setup should be much smaller than any of the canon dslrs. T3i EF-S 18-55II w/grip ¦ EF 35 2 ¦ EF 50 1.8

I'm certainly not interested in buying glass for a new mount that I can't use on other cams - too heavily invested in EOS. Don’t think twice, just GET IT. It’s worth every penny for the price! dave_bass5 wrote in post #14755404 For portraits i'd be inclined to go for the 50mm f1/.8, even though i know the 40mm is a better all round lens. The longer FL and ability to reduce the DOF more would be more useful. Im basing this on lack of funds though. Stir Fry A Lot wrote in post #14756696 For portraits get a 50 1.8 or 1.4. tkbslc wrote in post #14756717 Agree. A 50mm f1.8 is just as sharp at f2.8 as the 40mm, plus it's a better portrait length and it will provide far more subject isolation when used near wide open. It's also nearly half the price. You might also consider selling 18-55 for $90-100 and then adding the $200 you'd spend on the 40mm and getting a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 instead. They are $300-325 used and excellent for everything the kit lens does + portraits. Looks like I'm going to my camera store today and compare them. I'm certainly not interested in buying glass for a new mount that I can't use on other cams - too heavily invested in EOS. I've used an E-PL1 and hated the button config and lack of VF. It wasn't any smaller than my G11. I'll admit that the NEX cameras look pretty sweet, but then you slap a zoom lens on them and they're back to being SLR sized. Edit: Sorry, lol, not trying to start a debate or anything in the pancake thread. They're coming out with lenses specifically for this camera since they'll be smaller (22mm and the 40mm pancake). This camera is more for street-type, everyday shots (In my opinion), but with the great image quality and possible compatibility. If you own a DSLR, this camera doesn't make too much sense, but if you're wanting to move up from a point and shoot or from Micro 4/3's, then it may be nice. I has to be some combination of cheapness and focusing, I don't know. Selling my kit lens is out of the question. There's sand in the autofocus so it only works 50% of the time. I'm headed out the door right now to my camera shop and test them out. ![]() A bit late now but I would also have recommended the 50mm f/1.4 over the f/1.8 but I thought I wouldn't go too high price wise. Dave.
