I still think we are experiencing too much noise at low ISOs on my friend's 7D. Here are some crops at ISO 100 and it sure looks to me that there might be too much noise. Your opinions would be appreciated.

Middle image is out of focus for one thing.

Shouldn't you use the same lens to make a comparison?

What type of lens and whether the image is in focus or not really means nothing for ISO noise comparisons. In fact, I like OOF images better for comparing noise, so that I am not drawn to any real detail.

Yes the 7D has a dusting at the low ISOs, but nothing that shows up in print. Also make sure you don't have some of the features like highlight priority or ALO turned on.

Also, were these JPGs out of camera, or raw to jpg? It appears to me that these are JPGs, because the picture style/parameters don't appear to be the same. If you have the camera saturate and sharpen your images from the 7D, your results will be worse than if you shoot raw with sharpening turned down, and you clean up noise then sharpen.

TeamSpeed thanks for the informative reply. These images were all shot in Raw and then converted to jpgs for forum posting. For what it's worth we also mounted my 70-200 to his 7D and there was still the same noise patterns.

And since we are shooting in Raw I'm assuming the in-camera adjustments such as sharpening, contrast, saturation, etc only apply to jpg. Correct? Any other suggestions for getting cleaner images Sooc?

There also seems to be the old 100% crop pixel peeping issue here. Try resampling the 7D down to the 5D's resolution then try a crop.

Your settings might be the same for the 2 ISO 100 shots but your lighting seems to be different. Next time try doing the shots in door with artificial lighting. Use a tripod if you have to.

If you look at dpreview's excellent comparison tool the 7D at ISO 100 is hard to tell apart from the 5D2.

The 7d shots are underexposed. Underexposure enhances noise.

All images were taken with the same settings on a tripod. AV mode at 5.6 ISO 100. The 5D was shot with the 70-200 @ 200mm and the 7D with a 18-135 @ as close to 125mm as we could guess. The 7D shots were not underexposed.

Just because your settings are the same does not mean the exposure are the same. Unless you were in controlled lighting conditions. Get that in your head or you can have some badly exposed photos.

Also, even if all is the same some cameras still will be under exposed. It might say ISO 100 on both it doesn't mean both of them really have the same sensitivity.

Gotak while I appreciate that you are offering advice I am not looking for nor do I need any on how to properly expose a photo. The intent of this thread was to see if other 7D users have had similar findings with regard to noise.

pyrojim when you have something worthwhile to add to this thread I will be willing to consider your input.

Well if that's how you feel.

No we don't have the "issues" you do.

Stan,

These are my own personal findings between the two. YMMV.

nice comparisons Julian
looks like the noise is pretty similar in both.
maybe a touch more in the gray on the 7d but as Teamspeed said, nothing that shows up
in normal prints.

for the "distance", AF, FPS, and other things, the 7d is a "better" camera than the 7d I think.

My suspicion is that it is being caused by one or both of the following culprits:
- ALO
- PIC
