i am about to purchase my first set of prosumer triggers, i had a set of interfits but they crapped out and felt very cheaply made.

my one worry is the following, i keep seeing transmitters that must be attached to the camera's hotshoe, but i need to be able to keep an oncamera speedlight plus trigger a monolight.

maybe its a simple fix and i am overcomplicating it, is it possible to keep the speedlight on the camera and use the pc sync port to control the transmitter?

You can do that, yes. You could also buy the Pocket Wizard TT5 units, which have a hotshoe of their own built in, so you can mount a flash on top of the TT5.

I believe Photix makes a trigger set that allows this also. Probably half the price of the Wizards.

if you want manual triggers with ETTL passthrough, Phottix does make those.

$90 for a set of 2.

More than possible. At this moment, in my basement, I have a CowboyStudio transmitter hanging from the PC port and a FlashZebra long E-TTL cord in the hot shoe. The CS is triggering an old Sunpak as a rim light and the FZ runs to a 580 in master mode triggering a 430 slave in another umbrella. Needed a new Facebook profile picture.

Yes, assuming you are talking about using the PC port in the camera.
