Should I sell the 60D for the Olympus OMD EM-5?

I have been scouring the internetz for hours and hours trying to get reviews on the new Olympus EM-5, and it seems like a stellar camera. The only shortcoming is the number of lenses available for it.

My current setup is a gripped Canon 60D with a kit 18-135mm IS and the 75-300mm IS. I am not a pro and shoot for fun, family occasions and travel. I do enjoy photography a lot however and would like to become a lot more advanced in the art.

The new EM-5 seems to have a great style, **weatherproofing, AF video, touch to focus, and other day-to-day features that I think would be amazing to have. Also, it is much smaller, meaning I would be able to take it out more often.

From your experience/opinion, what are the downsides of the new Olympus EM-5? I really like the feel of the 60D but the EM-5 is starting to grow on me to a point where Im thinking to sell off my Canon gear and go Olympus.

Thanks.

if it will make you happier and shoot more then do it!

photography isnt about the gear, its about you having fun and getting your shots.

It looks like an awesome camera, and definitely very small. Couple it with a few select primes and you should be set (remember, you can use Panasonic m43 lenses on this too, as well).

Had I the cash, I'd probably also use the camera for when I didn't really need crazy shallow DOF or good subject tracking. I'd love to pair it with a 7-14 and maybe a 20 f/1.7 pancake

I think you will get better opinions from other forum i.e. mu-43.

I myself just received my silver OM-D 2 days ago and haven't had a chance to go out to shoot. Gorgeous looking retro-style camera. Impressive high ISO performance when I just tried it out in my bedroom with only bedside light on, something my Canon 400D/XTi cannot achieve.

I know one ex pro photog. He used to shot weddings and portraits at film.
He purchaised Nikon D7000 or something, big, heavy with all bells and whistles.
And... never used it for year. Sold it because it is too big and heavy to enjoy for casual photography and purchased OM. Seems to be very happy with size and performance.

I was advised by several pros years ago...when it comes to DSLR bodies....only purchase Canon or Nikon. The driving reason is support in terms or lenses, accessories, software programs that can handle the raw files....etc. Note that the advise had nothing to do with being able to make good shots with other brands.

You will have a hard time telling the difference between a 7d/60d vs a litlte M43 Oly E-M5.

I purchased one before an Alaskan cruise. The cheap 14 f/2.5 is a stellar lens almost as good as the 12mm f/2 (800 dollar lens). The PL 25mm f/1.4 is (50mm equiv on 35mm format) is better better than my canon 50mm f/1.4 and a tad less cream than a sigma 50mm.

Infact the E-m5 has much better resolution and IQ than my 1dmk3, 50d i've owned. Its actually very close to a 5dc with the right lenses.

Also another thing.... the em5 will have better ISO performance than your current 60D and all current rebel series. I wish I was joking. I am completly impressed with this little camera.

for more serious work I would stick with the 60D. For casual work the Em5 is more versatile simply due to size. I've done some studio lighting with Einsteins using the em5 and its very difficutl to tell the difference between my 5dc in studio work.

I wouldn't hesitate using the em5 for professional work taking photos of newborns/babies. I'll admit the Raw files from the em5 are razor sharp compared to a 7d raw file.

" I'll admit the Raw files from the em5 are razor sharp compared to a 7d raw file"

RAW files are RAW files no difference until they are PP.

Not with regard to noise and other things sensor related.... raw just means unprocessed, there are big differences as to how a given sensor gathers info and the quality of the gathered info between sensors. raw data is only a representation of the sensor in digital form.

Digital negatives/RAW when you import into LR4 you can "feel" the difference as you process the file.

The Olympus OMD Raw file is clean without the commonly seen feathered soft noise in a 7D raw file. Seems the 60D isn't as bad even though they share the same sensor to the 7d.

IIRC the 7D has a fairly aggressive AA filter, which accounts for some of the softness.

If that were the case no one would buy FF cameras.
