Second hand, both these seem to be going around the same price..

Im thinking the 1ds2 is the way to go?

I'm surprised that the prices are similar second hand. I almost went for a used 1Ds2 rather than a new 5D2 because the prices were very close, but both used?

The 1Ds will of course be built to proper pro standards, able to survive an atomic war almost! The 5D2 is not as robust. On the other hand, you get more MP for your money with the 5D2.

For some reason 5d2 are still hovering around $2300 new in Australia and around $1900 for a lightly used around 1800-1900

I was hoping the 5d3 would drive down prices of 5d2 but unfortunately not..

I'm assuming IQ is equal between the two cameras?

$2300 to $1900. Thats a suprisingly little drop from new to used.

5d2 produces much more flexible and better images. I had a pair of 5d classics, now pair of 5d2s and a 1ds ii. The only real-world benefits of the 1ds II are very quick shutter lag, active-point spot metering, more AF points for those who care about that, and a little faster focus (people say it is because of higher voltage). The 5d2 is equal or better in every other non-weather-sealing way.
