wow, the 650D now matches the 60D specs wise and it has a faster SD Card slot than the 5DIII, can't wait to see sample pics to see if Canon improved the performance of the 18MP sensor or if it's just a straight hand me down from the 60D.

So if Canon continues this pattern, the 70D should adopt most of the specs from the 7D and I'm hoping this means a very nice upgrade for the 7DII.

Edit: this must also mean that the 70D release is right around the corner, no need to spend the money on the 60D with these specs unless you simply must have the build and ergonomics.....

From pictures found on this site http://www.canonwatch.com/tag/t4i/ (external link) it looks to have some new pop up flash system. (also pictured on above link to canon rumors further down the page)

Nope. Same pop-up frame-style flash. The thing you see in the middle of it are the new dual microphones.

It's essentially a 60D in a smaller package.
Finally Canon upgraded the AF!!! though it's still a very old one (same as 40D)
And also 5fps!!!
It would be interesting to see how Canon positions the 70D, I bet it'll be a huge step from the 60D

Touchscreen is pretty worthless to me. Using both hands to pinch-zoom on a DSLR has got to be awkward.

I noticed on CR's spec listing that the viewfinder lists a pentaprism. Up to this point all of the Rebel's that I'm aware of have had penta mirrors, not true prisms. I wonder if this is another change?

As long as it isn't a typo, you're correct. Rebels up to and including the T3i use a fixed pentamirror.

That looks like a great camera and certainly a good upgrade to the Rebel lineup. The one thing that would of made it excellent would be the inclusion of a better AF system similar to the 5D2 with invisible assist points and all cross points, or similar to the 7D which would of put a nail in the coffin of all other xxxD or xxD bodies. The addition of a pentaprism instead of the pentamirror and the addition of the touchscreen (hopefully as well as a button menu system) which hopefully will be responsive under load will make it a major improvement. I might even have to upgrade the wifes T2i with one.

Virto, the 5D2 had invisible assist points around the centre point that would help focus without showing. From Canon's website : 9-point AF + 6 Assist AF points. Precision auto focus is assured by Canon’s AF system, which employs 9 selectable points and 6 Assist AF points.

5D2? It should already perform at least as well, given that it's now getting a carryover AF system from the 40/50D/60D. The 5D2 AF is the same basic system, as far as I'm aware.

Based on the features of this new Rebel, I expect the following (all baseless assumption)
The TXi will remain the high-end Rebel with all the neat gizmos.
There will probably continue to be a TX Rebel to eat up the low-cost market segment.
60D form factor will continue, becoming the 70D or possibly 80D, to avoid potential 7D confusion. It'll have essentially the same specs as the TXi, but in the larger size with twin LCDs.
The new 7D will be a Mk2 and feature the same AF system as the 5D3, and probably not cost all that much less.

Of course, I'm just making this up and talking out of my butt, but it does seem likely that it's the business plan Canon will stick to.

I like it. It is a true upgrade in the Rebel lineup and bodes VERY well for the 70d and 7dii.
