I am new to dslr photography and need help choosing a lens for a Rebel XT. What I need to know is the difference between the 70-300mm IS USM (black lens for about $650) and the 100-400mm IS USM (white lens for about $1550). I understand that the zoom is greater on the 100-400 but is that the only difference? Is the picture quality difference worth the extra $900?
The only reason I am considering the more expensive lens is because I have seen pictures taken with this camera lens combo. The subject matter was the exact same thing I will be using it for and the pics looked wonderful. If the picture quality is the same between the two lenses, I think I can get buy with the 70-300. I don't want to spend more than I have to, but I don't want to buy something that won't do what I want it to.
Just to let you know, I will be photographing remote control helicopters that are flying. I want to get blade-stop, or close to blade-stop photos. The photos I saw with the Rebel XT/ 100-400 combo were great. Could I except the same performance with the 70-300 if I were standing closer when taking the pictures?
Thanks,
Medflight
