Clearly aimed at video-users......
.....but could that 40mm pancake also mean Canon are finally going to announce a compact, mirrorless, interchangeable lens, body which can take EF or EF-S lenses?

I do hope so....

The camera includes a revolutionary new autofocus (AF) system to help achieve fast, sharp focus and smooth HD video. The new AF system includes a nine-point all cross-type sensor array, and new Hybrid CMOS AF which achieves fast focus when shooting stills or video in Live View mode. Much to the pleasure of aspiring student filmmakers and parents everywhere, the Rebel T4i features Canon’s new Movie Servo AF providing a quiet, continuous AF during HD video recording when using one of Canon’s newly introduced Stepping Motor (STM) lenses. The silent continuous autofocus when shooting HD video helps ensure the camera only captures the sounds of the scene being recorded. When combined with the camera’s new Vari-angle Touch Screen 3.0-inch Clear View LCD monitor II and intuitive “fingertip” controls, touch-menu and advanced still and video capabilities, the EOS Rebel T4i stands as Canon’s most “consumer-friendly” DSLR to date.

so the 650D only automatically auto focuses with the STM lenses or can one use other lenses (and still have auto-auto focus) if we don't care about the focus noise?

Yeah hoo! A superzoom and a slow prime. I can't wait... For the next lens announcement.

That's one way to look at it...another way to look at it is for $200 you get a lens that's reasonably fast, incredibly small/light, has 7 curved aperture blades, FTM and a host of other features...in addition it looks to be well constructed...metal mount and what looks like either a metal barrel or a polycarbonate...either way, it beats the construction of the 50 1.8 and 50 1.4, at least from what I can tell on the initial promo pictures. Oh and it gets the nice L-type AF/MF switch instead of the annoying little ones used on other many lenses, such as the 50 1.4/1.8.

Do I wish it was an f2? Absolutely. Were it an f2 I'd have pre-ordered one the second it went up. But...even as it is, I think it has a reasonably high performance-to-dollar value. I live in a very crowded place where the notion of personal space is non-existent. A small walkaround setup is very desirable from that aspect...but, in general, a pancake lens on a 5D would be rather inconspicuous, hopefully allowing more candid-type shots than slapping the 16-35L II on the front.

This new STM development is quite interesting.
It caters mostly to the video crowd.
I wonder if all non-L lenses released from now on will have STM...

Think new Canon lenses are overpriced? Lots (and lots) of data will set you free!

Slow, stabilised lenses. STM technology.

These are video lenses which can also be used to shoot stills. I hope they're not charging an extra $500 for it, like they do with IS - I certainly wouldn't want to pay $3500 for a 100-400L IS II STM when it comes out, because of 'video'...
