So looking at the T4i specs there's really nothing left to differentiate the Rebels from the XXD (60D) cameras, is there? Are Canon simplifying their lineup?

Personally don't think so. 650D gets 60D specs (actually better specs), while 60D replacement is rumored to be getting 7D spec, etc. I think Canon is up-scaling their DSLR lines to accomodate the introduction of their rumored mirrorless. Consumers wins in the end as long as the price remains in line with their respective series.

the rebel line still doesnt have the top LCD or the rear wheel which is almost essential for manual mode shooting.
the XXd line will be fine.

What I know for sure is that they don't want to get rid of the crappy 9 points AF system:)

But the touch screen will offset that greatly, while not as easy to check settings, it will be easier to adjust and change

Maybe the 70D will be like the 7D and the 7DII will be Canon's version of the rumored Nikon D600 (cheaper/basic full frame)?

There is still room for the rebel series (xxxD), a slightly higher end camera with bigger grip (xxD) and the flagship crop-sensor model (xD)

You are comparing a 2 year old 60D with a 1 hour old Rebel. Features trickle down. I just think it means 70D will have 7D AF and at least 7fps. 7Dmk2 will probably have the 5Dmk3 AF and machine gun fps.

Personally, I think Canon is getting scared by all the mirrorless cameras in that segment and wanted to beef up the Rebel so it looks more attractive in comparison.

What a load of old tosh.

So what is the reason then that EVERY other line of canon DSLR's has a rear wheel and at least one extra LCD for settings.

Not saying you can't shoot a rebel in manual, or that they aren't capable of taking great pictures, and the t4i's specs look pretty nice, but once you have two wheels, there is no going back.

Not really. How do you adjust stuff with the camera up to your eye on the touchscreen? How's that going to work out?
