I guessed the info you put.
Was more interested in focus shoot modes ... you seem to capture the action well.
Did you have any soft focus shoots in serries ??

Why such small apertures ? where you shooting in Tv mode ? Why not M ? with smaller aperture such as f/2.8 the subject would be better isolated when background is busy.

The loose backgrounds really don't add anything to these shots, I'd like to see them cropped tighter and take shots with faces in view, like the other guy in #3.

Used AI focus, center cluster, and RAW; Shaped all in Bridge

These are from a local competition back in May, I have a ton of shots from the event and yes some were soft or out of focus

Yes I was using Tv, I perfume to control shutter speed to help maintain the sharpness, small F-stop are for a wider depth of field

The photog in #3 is one reason I like the shot; I belive wide crops or framing is the popular trend in action sport

At f/2.8 ISO100 you would have gotten over 1/3200 easy. Also having small apertures F11 and beyond it will soften the image due to diffraction.

In sports subject isolation is king...:)

Only reason to shoot wide is to include something like huge waves or random crowd to show how the participant is threading the needle. Take a look at sports illustrated or another popular outlet, all cropped tight unless there is some other reason to show context...cheering crowd, yardline marker to illustrate position on the field, coach yelling, etc. In these, tight crop will help unless (like #3) there is some other reason to include extra bits.

2 is my favorite of the set, cleanest background
Try to avoid thos cluttered BG's, they can be very distracting
as said earlier, open up the lens to isolate the subject further, and allow you to shoot at a higher hutter speed to avoid motion blur
