I see a number of avatars and self portraits of togs with cameras in the faces as if shooting.

Silly / stupid question; How?
- Mirror,
- another camera - what to focus on
- another camera & shooter (then it's not really a self portrait)

Stand in front of bathroom mirror and shoot away. Make Duckface lips face pose. Classic! :D

Use either a cable release, a wireless release, or the camera self-timer.

Manually focus to the best distance, then use one of the above, or you can try to auto-focus using the cable or remote release.
