Large image dimensions with small file size?

I searched the forums but couldn't really find what I was looking for, so here goes:

In Photoshop how do you get an image say 2000x1333 pixels to only be around 300-400Kb without sacrificing image quality? Every time I try they wind up around 1MB.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is driving me crazy!!

For the given size/dimensions in pixels, you adjust the jpeg Quality setting to get your desired file size.

While it's true that a lower Quality means a higher compression, for something like viewing the image on the Web or other computer viewing the lower quality setting shouldn't make for a "bad" image assuming the original image quality is good.

If you are going to print at a large size, then it makes sense to set a higher Quality setting even though the file size will be larger.

If you're using Photoshop - go to File/Save for Web. Just to the right of the Presets is a dropdown box. Click on it and choose Optimize to File Size. Enter you desired size, hit ok, and save.

Depending on the (amount of detail (including noise) in the) image, you might not be able to get it below that size while maintaining quality.
