A friend of mine went to Ireland for his leave last month, and brought back some British photography magazines. One of them, called Digital Photo, really impressed me. I looked on their website to see about subscribing, and was shocked by the price of subscription. For UK residents the price for 12 issues equals $87 USD. And for me to subscribe from the States would be $140. I like the magazine, but not that much. A photography magazine from the States is usually less than $20 for 12 issues.

Is everything that expensive in the UK, or is this magazine just so popular that they can charge that much?

Everything. Anything. And if it isn't, they slap a tax on it. No make that two. Did I mention VAT. Road fund licence £170. Petrol £4 gallon. Congestion charge £8 day. Move into a bus lane with your car £100. One bedroom flat in outer London £160,000. Community charge £1500. Breathing £1.50 a breath.

Well, the last one is not real, but for how long

You really must visit!

Graham

Ok, It's not all bad, you can get fixed up for free if you get shot.

With the exception of a couple of North American magazine that I subscribe to , I buy just the UK magazines. Their quality and content are much better than most we get on this side of the Atlantic. Yes, they are expensive but I feel they are well worth it.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.

you forgot the Dollar to Pound conversion when buying
1$ = 1£

but in support of magazines some are excellent in quality of content and of paper feel.

I know this won't apply to Mike in Iraq, but most British photography magazines are available to purchase (or reading) in the U.S. in Barnes & Noble or Borders bookstores. I scan through them every now and then. Some are OK and some are a little too basic, but I agree that on average, they're more interesting than the standard U.S. magazines.

Mike,
Did you manage to see copies of Digital Camera Magazine or of Photography Monthly? They are my favourites. The latter is particularly good for film and digi enthusiasts.

Yes, Britain is an expensive place. It is not for nothing that multinationals call it "Treasure Island"!

Keep safe.

I've seen several British magazines, but I don't remember any of their names off the top of my head. I do agree that most of the British magazines seem to have much better information than the American ones. But not $140 better.

You can often get subscriptions much cheaper than the official direct price. Try a Google on 'uk magazine subscriptions'. For UK people you may be able to save even more via a couple of companies by going through Quidco.com

As to UK prices .... ZZZZZZzzzzz

A bit of shopping around and common sense can often save significant amounts of cash.

Just to point something out to Graham, there is no UK tax on printed matter.

You get what you pay for. I have been to the US a lot (at least twice a year) and I must say the $20 subscription photography (and computer) magazines are pretty awful in quality and content. I agree with Terry, for the DSLR owners EOS Magazine is light years ahead of anything else around.

Mike,

Not sure if it's possible to send to American Forces postal from the UK, however if there's a British unit you're in regular contact with I'd be willing to send any back issues of various mags care of their BFPO number for you.

PM me if so.

Cameras, lenses and lots to learn.

Thanks for the kind offer, Timm, but I'm about to leave Iraq. I'm also not in contact with any Brits. I was hoping to subscribe from home, but not at those prices. I think I'll settle for a cheap American one.
