I'm in the NWT and I've only seen red foxes before. Although today I saw this guy, is it a cross between two different types or just a different colored red fox?

I've seen a red fox kit that was that color. Don't know for sure, but they do come in black sometimes.

Thanks man. I always keep my camera and lens together and within reach when I drive around for situations such as this.

It was just walking along in the ditch. I was ready to jump out of truck and follow it a little ways into the bush but since it had food my girlfriend said itd prob be better to leave it alone so it could feed its pups. Sound reasoning since animals such as this don't usually carry food around whilst it is easier eaten :)

So this color is a step between it's winter fur & summer fur or something?

Someone on my Facebook just said its most likely a cross fox. After a quick google it seems like it could be.

Nice catch on this, wiki says cross foxes make up 30% of the Canadian fox population.
Pretty cool looking fellow (or mom) either way.

Indeed it's a cross fox, Very beautiful capture. Cross fox is a genetically a red fox but carries a modified melanin gene that produces this coloration. It will be like that year round minus some shade changes from winter coat to summer. Almost looks like a Norway Rat in its mouth.

Shampoo sounds like an unfortunate name for a hair product.
You're a ghost driving a meat-coated skeleton made from stardust, riding a rock, hurtling through space. Fear Nothing!

Yes, nice shot of a cross fox. They seem to be getting more common in the Yukon in recent years.

Beautiful shot of a fox with bad hair! He will surely look much better late this fall, right now he seems to be between coats. Sharp photo!
