(I will apologize in advance..)

Ok, So I was given the task of getting a Canon D2000 up and running. My dad bought this thing about 10 years ago and has never gotten it to work. Ive been scouring the internet trying to figure this thing out and been coming up empty or misguided by old information. So here we go:

Its a very very clean Canon D2000, It has 3 batteries which either don't hold much of a charge or the camera just eats up batteries. I havent figured out yet which it is. But Ive managed to update the firmware (thanks POTN!) and even managed to format the CF card and take some pictures. Heres where my first concern arises; Using a 16GB CF card, I can only take 12 pictures and then it says "Card Full". When I look at the pictures on the CF drive theyre coming in around 1.8MB each. (the MB and GB math isnt adding up to me)

Now I know I need some software to get the pictures off the camera and into a usable format. I installed the Kodak DCS Twain software, Adobe Photoshop, and this Kodak camera manager. And in the end all I get is either little thumbnails (which are 1.8MB a pop) or a picture format error.

I have a feeling Im doing multiple things wrong but the Users guide isnt much help (Its mostly referring to outdated programs) and the internet info is scarce. So any help would be awesome.

I thank all in advance and hope for newbie forgiveness!

Patrick

I doubt that camera is compatible with a 16GB card. Try an older 512 MB or maybe a 1GB card and see what you get.

This might fix all of your problems. You may be confusing the camera with that 16GB card.

When the newspaper I worked for 17 years, we went from Nikon film bodies to Canon D2000 cameras when the newspaper went digital. Honestly, the worst camera I've ever used.

One thing which puzzles me, how did you get to use a CF card with your D2000 when the D2000 uses the old 340MB PCMCIA card?

Ten years and already outdated. Thats terrible.

I'd expect manufacturers to maintain the software/cards/spares for twice that long at the very least.

That might be the thing confusing the camera. Trying to use a card reader with a 16GB card in it. I'd try and find a card that went with that camera. I doubt they make them anymore.

Maybe this will work with it...

This one (Basically the same camera) comes with the PCMCIA Reader and a 128 MB card.

I would try a smaller storage card like I mentioned before but maybe find a 128MB card or a 256MB card. You can find tons of them on ebay.

Yes, a CF to PCMCIA adapter.

Derrrr!

Why didn't I think of that. My brain switches off on Saturday afternoons ;)

I think you are in for a lot of disappointments. Today's technology is coming at us so quickly and being updated so frequently that there is no way manufacturers can be expected to spend resources on products more than a few years.

Cameras 10 years from now will make the Canon 1Dx look like the Canon D2000. :)

I grew up with old cars, my Fathers then mine. 20 years old was new to us and parts were readily obtainable. Yes, they needed a lot of maintenance, but no one ever suggested that we should be buying newer vehicles, which we could not have afforded anyway.

I don't see digital photographic kit as any different. I don't want the latest model camera, all I want is one that suits my needs.

My first cable box from 1985 will never work with todays cable systems. In fact I had to update the box if I wanted to keep cable. today I have satellite. I' don't think I'll ever go back to cable TV.

My first data communications device was a 300 baud modem on a Commodore 64... We know which way that went...

Also, I just tried turning on an older cell phone. I found out that it wasn't compatible with the new software at the updated towers. I couldn't use the phone away from home anymore because they hadn't updated the software at the tower near my home yet.

We are in different worlds. Cable? Satellite? I'm still perfectly happy with my "normal" TV, not that I watch much of it these days.
