I'm trying to purchase a few new things and thought I'd post some things for sale here or send them to one of the retail places for a store credit. I found this lens in an old box and have no clue what it is. It doesn't have Canon mounts and the lens body doesn't say which brand of camera that it's for. The front of the lens reads "CPC Auto Zoom 80-200mm CCT 1:4.5 MC @55" and then what I appear to be the serial number. It has a sticker on the barrel that says "Quality Passed" and it says "lens made in Korea" on the mounting ring.

It's clearly an old lens for a long forgotten film camera but it's worth anything and someone else can make use of it, I'd like to know what it is and what the value is, if anything.

Thanks in advance if anyone can tell me anything. Sorry about the poor quality pictures, I was using my kids' very cheap point and shoot.

Actually, that is a Canon mount lens, it uses the old post-1970's FD mount that Canon used before the EOS system.

FD mount:

CPC or Cosmicar is a subsidiary of Pentax, so these are technically re-branded Pentax lenses that do not feature multi-coating on the lens elements. This lens is probably 1980's vintage.

And finally I reckon you could probably let that lens go for about... $30 tops. It's just not worth much I'm afraid. Edit: actually maybe less since it looks rather beat-up.

I acquired an expensive camera so I can hang out in forums, annoy wedding photographers during formals and look down on P&S users... all the while telling people it's the photographer, not the camera.

Thank you very much. I think the lens is dirty from bouncing around in a box but I don't think it's in terrible shape. That said, I didn't venture that it was worth much more than you suggested, I thought if I could get $50 I'd be thrilled. Thanks again, it's much appreciated.

You can find several CPC lenses on Ebay for around $30, so I'm basing that as the standard price you can buy/sell them for, but $50 is a little much; you can already start finding lenses like Asahi takumars for that much.

OK, good info to know. I really appreciate you taking the time considering the extremely limited value of this item.

It's alright, I tend to take lots of time examining items of limited value at junk markets, but you do get gems every now and then.

If you don't mind manual focusing, there are many great lenses you can find in the $50~200 range, particularly from Asahi-pentax (smc takumar); Soviet lenses like the Mir-20M, 24M, Apo Telezenitar; and many others available for M42 or M39 mounts (screw bayonet mounts popular way back when and are often easily adaptable to Canon EOS).

Since these lenses are solidly built, have a long focus throw w/ hard stop and manual aperture, it's a bargain to adapt them for video use in particular.

Seems that I was lucky to find an expert on the subject to answer my request, thanks again.
