Well, for my wife anyway. This marks my 4th Canon camera. I got her an S2is for an early christmas gift. (She got me a Sigma 70-200 2.8 for the 300D) She is getting into the photography a little bit so I got it for her "starter" camera. Quite a nice little camera. Image quality is good and seems to have a lot of nice features.. I'm still adjusting to the LCD viewfinder but I like it. Anyone else had this camera a little while and care to comment on anything about it?

Edit: Maybe should be in the "small digital section". Any admins wanna help me out?

Great choice! Two recommendations: Get some NiMH rechargeable AA batteries in the 2500 mAh range, a couple of 512 or larger SD memory cards and a card reader, and when the time comes to investigate wide-angle or teleconverter add-ons, check www.lensmateonline.com (external link)

I know she will enjoy her new camera :-)

I went ahead and grabbed her a 1gb SD when I bought the camera. I thought about the rechargable AA's when I realized it didn't take a battery pack like my camera. thanks for the recommendations and info on the add-ons.

You will need a high speed card to avoid buffer overrun on video. This is not optional - if you didn't get a high speed card, return it and get a new one. Trust me on this one.

I don't use my S2 for video shooting, although I did make a few just to see how it worked. They were 2 - 5 minutes in length, max size and quality, and I didn't have any problems with "standard" Lexar and Sandisk media. The high speed cards may be a minor convenience when transferring data, but I don't see them as essential for the S2 -- especially for "normal" photo use.

if youve got a little extra cash, you realy should go for the faster card. something like a sandisk ultra, or something fast

30mm, 50mm, 85mm, and some zooms here and there.

A camera retailer may provide advice and problem-solving, but I wouldn't count on as much service from a big-box electronics store (e.g. CircuitCity or BestBuy). Personally, I have no hesitation to order from a reliable online dealer such as B & H. However, a local shop may do as well on price once you figure in shipping; taxes vary by state, so that may or may not have a big impact. I seldom go for the rock-bottom price, because too many of those outfits are sleazy operators. Check the "Marketplace" forum here for more info.

Hi,
I am new to the forum. My question: I am interested in purchasing the S2 S1 canon and would like your opinion on purchasing from an on line seller. What have been your experiences and who would you suggest? On line pricing appears to be good. Local camer stores, in many cases do not discount. What about problems with the camer and service if needed? Price v/s piece of mind purchase from local camer store. I want the best of both worlds. Why not try.

Help!! How do you post a general question like above to the users of a S2 IS
and not to a specific person?

Thanks,
Ron

Welcome, Ron. Questions about the S2 are more appropriate in the "Small Digital Cameras..." forum, but I bet quite a few S2 owners check here too.

Most people who order online from B&H (www.bhphotovideo.com (external link)) have had good experiences, myself included. There are many other reputable online dealers, but there are also some sleazy ones. If the price is much lower, then it's a likely a questionable deal... they may not honor the price unless you load up on more over-priced accessories. Check the "Marketplace" forum here for some other tips, recommendations, and warnings about online ordering.

you can also google the name of the company, and usually a review sites will come up. beware, because there ARE review sites especially made for the "sleazy" online companies, but those are easy to pick out (some of them don't have a single review rating bellow 4/5 stars!)
