We had noticed cardinals hanging out near the front door a lot recently. Discovered that they had built a nest in a Pygmy Date Palm about 10 ft from the front door, right beside the walkway. So...carefully and discreetly placing a ladder behind a pillar near the front door, I took these shots today. Weather was overcast and then rainy (last shot). T3i, 100-400 at 300 to 400, variety of f-ratios trying to capture depth while not getting motion blur from me or birds, ISO 1600 or 3200.

Hopefully it will be sunny tomorrow and I can get faster shots at lower ISO.

EDIT: I noticed the resized-for-posting images were a little noisy, so I re-did them using a different tool.

Great shots.

Thanks. I just updated the image links to ones that seem less noisy after resizing. Apparently GIMP is the tool I should batch-resize with...

What a nice set this is. Really very nice. I love #2; there really seems to be tenderness in the mother's gaze.

Great shots!

I notice you are using a T3i with EF lenses. I'm a rank newbie so forgive the dumb question but I didn't think EF would work with a T3i?

Very nice indeed Steve,

And it seems your discretion allowed these sweet captures without disturbing them...
Also real good IQ for high-ISO shots.

good work,

Yeah, I was kinda worried ISO 3200 would result in the image just degrading too much, but it appears that the T3i is OK at the aperture/shutter speed (i.e. overall exposure level) I had.

Unfortunately, the babies were missing the next day. I suspect a snake got them.

:(
