T3i or T4i?

Well this is an interesting development for me.

I bought 3Ti two weeks ago but they didn't have the body/lens combo in stock and had to order it. The camera and lens came in last Thursday but I wasn't able to pick it up on Thursday or Friday. Then Friday night I see the intro of the 4Ti. Wat?

So on Saturday instead of going to pickup my 3Ti I went and got a full refund because I want to figure out the best thing to do...get the 3Ti or wait for the T4i. I'm in no hurry and especially don't want to buy two year old technology if the 4Ti is a better camera on balance.

Thoughts?

If you can wait, wait. If you need a camera now, the T3i is great.

It depends. If you get a great deal on a T3i then the step up to a T4i might not be worth it. I'm assuming prices of T3is will continue to drop as the T4i is closer to release.

I'd wait. The updated AF alone is worth it. And its T4i and T3i

Well I got a decent price on the T31 but nothing earth shaking.

I am just wondering if the 4Ti with a few enhancements wil lbe worth the little extra money. I have no way of knowing this since I am only stepping up from a G12. I had no idea that Canon was going to introduce an upgrade to the 3Ti at this time. Now I'm in a quandary.

Like i said I cancelled the order for the 3Ti and guess I should wait to touch and feel the 4Ti.

What features might be worth waiting for...? 5.0 FPS Continuous Shooting? Touch screen. DIGIC 5 Image Processor?. I dunno what i'm talking about. The 3Ti would have been fine i suppose (since I bought it) but I'm like most...don't want to buy old technology.

So now I'm confused about the lenses that are better for the 4Ti.

I was getting:

• EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS
  
• Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens

The most important update IMO is the AF system - it gets the same system as the XXD series currently has. 5fps is nice, but TBH I don't really see that much use for it. Digic 5 could be useful, video AF is good too. Touch screen is redundant IMO, but you don't have to use it if you don't want to.

The new AF does not require different lenses, however STM lenses would work better because the STM AF is designed for continuous silent AF. You can still use any EF or EF-S lens with the T4i.

As for taking advantage of the T4i's new AF, right now there are only two STM lenses. The new 18-135mm and the 40mm pancake.

Wait for the new T4i with the new 18-135mmII kit. Both the camera and lens should be a significant improvement over the older versions. You also should consider the Tamron 70-300mm USD VC over the Canon 70-300mm IS. Better lens all of the way around and you can pick it up for $349 after the $100 rebate.

In two years the T4i WILL BE old technology. Buy the best you can afford right now. I still shoot a T1i and a 60D. They will be 'old' when I buy my 5D3 next March. I'll still use them anyway. In 2017 my 5D3 will be old technology. Speaking of old, my Yashica FX-2 was made in 1976. Anyone think their current DSLR will still be working as designed in 2048? Old does NOT mean, bad or inadequate. It just means manufactured a long time ago. Heck, I was made in 1957 and I am still working as designed, for the most part.

True, but if you are going to spend $950 for upgraded AF, I'd just get the 60D.

Yes but us newer 80's models have way cooler features


for the OP: I got my T3i earler this year and have no plans to chase the dragon on the next best thing. If you prefer the features of the new T4i over what the T3i still has to offer then wait, but if the T3i will suit your needs then (maybe) wait and get it on sale as your local gizmo store ushers in the t4i. If your looking faster shooting for action then you may want to look at the 7D if its in your range. The T4i video autofocus is handy if you shoot a lot of video but its not that difficult to focus the t3i in the first place. I haven't read much of the touchscreen but I hopefully assume its able to be disabled as if you use the viewfinder you nose may end up likely changing the picture size (at least thats where my nose smudges always are)
